Happy Hour: Drinking in the Fall

Sep 14, 2018

For many years, my favorite former co-worker and friend, Virginia, and I have been engaged in a cold war.  Every year on Starbucks pumpkin spice latte day, she bombards me with photos of all things PSL related.  And then, I send her angry emojis.

Because when I think of fall, I don’t think of vaguely nutmeg-flavored lattes with artificial orange coloring, I think of Bourbon cocktails.  To each her own.

This week’s cocktail is a gorgeous, fruity Blood Orange Bourbon Smash from Just a Little Bit of Bacon.  Now, I know blood oranges aren’t in season right now.  But something about the velvety texture and tart, citrusy flavor makes this cocktail feel perfect for the summer-to-fall transition.  Still light enough for summer, but with a hint of “winter is coming.”

Since in-season blood oranges are off the table.  I recommend Liber + Co’s Blood Orange Cordial.  Or you can switch out the blood orange juice and the soda water for those fabulous San Pelligrino blood orange sparkling sodas.

As for what to wear while drinking it…

How about a floral midi?  Wear it now with bright jewelry and an open-toe shoe.  Wear it when the fall chill hits with high boots.

This Ganni Rometty dress is fabulously bohemian with enough structure to be chic.  If you’re looking for something more relaxed, try this Ted Baker Luella dress.

Now, if you like the idea of a moody floral dress, but you want something a bit cheaper, try this lovely chiffon Vince Camuto for $129.  I also found this Influence Shirred Sleeve Dress for under-$50.

But my favorite dress of all…

Is this fantastic, gorgeous, soft floral dress from Dorothy Perkins by Little Mistress for $119.  Wear it with this Banana Republic open cardigan and a pair of gray boots.  It would also be perfect for a spring event or under a split-side black sweater with tights in winter.

Won’t ever understand folks obsession with PSL, as a former barista I always dreaded this time of year. And another great Autumn drink is a Ciderhouse Whiskey with fresh made Boiled Cider…yum! A few years ago I made spiced whiskey and cider syrup and distributed them as gifts with the recipe card for the drink. Quite a hit!

That ciderhouse whiskey looks so good! Have any recommendations for non-alcoholic non-PSL fall drinks? (I can’t imbibe for a couple months post-surgery and am looking for good alternatives for cocktail gatherings.)

Spiced apple cider! You can mull it on the stove or in a crockpot with spices and a bit of orange juice, garnish with a bit of citrus.

I really like the San Pelligrino Blood Orange soda. I use it to make a variation of a Garibaldi (Campari and orange juice).

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
