Ask the Edit: Jewelry for a Casual Wedding

Jul 5, 2018

Do you own a dress with a square neckline?  It can be so hard to choose the right jewelry.  Here are some choices for a casual wedding outfit.

Abra,

I have a dress (this one from MM. LaFleur) that I’m planning to wear to my sister’s casual-ish wedding next month. All my necklaces are super short (16-ish inches) and end up buried in the neckline. Any ideas for jewelry?

Thanks, Kelly

Pairing a necklace with a square neckline can be tricky.  You want something long, but also narrow.  A necklace that hangs widely will mess up the neckline.  So I would recommend a long pendant necklace.

This Alexis Bittar pendant necklace is unique with mixed metals and a modern flare.  I also like this Cole Haan long teardrop necklace and this Stella & Dot tortoise pendant.  Looking for something under-$25?  This Universal Thread geometric necklace is pretty fantastic.

I would probably choose a bracelet/bracelets instead.  Let the square neckline stand on its own.

These $8 stacked bracelets from F21 mix shiny metals with a natural woods.  It’s a nice pairing with the olive dress.  I also like this wide hinge cuff from Thalia Sodi.  For something totally unique, this cube bracelet is the kind of piece no one else will have.

If you choose the bracelet route or the necklace route, keep the earrings simple.  A stud in the same metal or a small drop earring.  A simple pair of hoops would also work.

Not into bracelets or a necklace?  Wear your hair up in a looser, more modern chignon, and pick a bold earring.

These Kate Spade leaf earrings are a classic, but interesting, shape.  I also love these Robert Lee Morris stick and drop earrings; they look more expensive than their $32 price range suggests.  For something really opulent try these Eddie Borgo disc-accented chandelier earrings.

Have fun at the wedding!

I like pendant necklaces for higher necklines like your dress. Kendra Scott has a lot of long pendant necklaces and they’re on sale at Nordstrom right now: https://shop.nordstrom.com/c/kendra-scott.

There are similar ones on Amazon if you’re not sure about how much you’d use it after the wedding.

Just ordered the cube bracelet! It’s the perfect blend of cool and understated I go for.

Thanks for saving me hours (and hours) of searching on the internet.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
