Ask the Edit: Bedsheet Suggestions

Jul 3, 2018

When you work hard, nothing is as important as sleeping well, and a comfortable bed is essential to sleeping well.  The mattress is important, but the sheets?  The sheets are what takes a bed from comfortable to sumptuous.

Hi there,

This may not be in your wheelhouse, but thought I’d give it a shot. I’m looking for recommendations for bedsheets. I’m a bit particular in that I like nice crisp sheets that are all white. I’ve ordered a few sets of sheets off HauteLook and Gilt and while they have the right crispness, they don’t stay tight around my mattress (standard pillowtop) and then the sheets get all wrinkly and I loathe sleeping on wrinkles!

Do you have any suggestions? Thank you! Molly

My favorite sheets brand is Charter Club from Macy’s.  They have different weaves, thread counts, and styles.  They also have a wide variety of colors.  Sadly, they stopped making my preferred set, but they makes several great options.

I highly recommend this 800tc Luxe Ultra 4-piece sheet set.  They are also 100% cotton.  They are also 20% off with code FOURTH.

Another great option is this 400tc Sleep Cool sheet set to help keep you cooler in the hot summer months.

If all you really need is to make your sheets fit to the bed tighter, than there is another solution.  These sheet suspenders clip to the corners of the fitted sheet to hold them in place.

I can’t recommend brooklinen high enough. I also love plain white sheets and theirs are almost satiny in terms of smooth/soft to the touch but have a thickness and sturdiness that I think lays really nicely.

I really like my Brooklinen sheets. I am a warm sleeper and they are great for staying cool and have an awesome crisp feel. I have the basic white ones and after many washes the elastic still fits tightly around our queen mattress.

I second the Charter Club sheets recommendation–I’ve had two sets of their sheets for a few years now, and they wear and wash wonderfully.

I saw this post on wirecutter, and bought the JC Penny set in white. I love them, and my guests do too!

Cannot recommend Brooklinen enough! Their sheets are high quality and get better with every wash. They have a pretty good selection of colors/prints and the pricing bundles aren’t too hard on the wallet.
I would also keep an eye out for their sales – sometimes they offer free shipping or discounts on prints/colors they are retiring.

Target’s house brand, Threshold, makes divine cotton percale 300ct sheets: it’s unbelievable how much better they are than some of my upmarket “hotel style” sheets with high thread counts. They have deep pockets and good elastic–they don’t budge!–and they stay crispy, wash and wear like iron, and get a nice softness that doesn’t include losing their crispness.

I can’t find them online because I bought mine in person, but worth it.

Completely agree re: Wirecutter! Even though I trust Wirecutter with almost everything, I was a little hesitant about the JC Penney because of some of the reviews (and not being sure about their quality generally), but the sheets have been AMAZING. Wait for a sale — we got them around $72 for a king size, I believe.

I’m a Lands Ends aficionado. Their sheets wash up well and are the softest 100% cotton ones I’ve ever used. I’d buy more sets if it made sense to have more than two!

My husband and I have the LL Bean set recommended by Wirecutter, and they’re great.

We got a set of parachute sheets last year and are very happy with them. They were a bit of a splurge but worth it. They are especially good if you don’t want a top sheet (although I do)

  11. Sarah says:

Comphy! They are so, so luxurious. https://www.comphy.com/touch

  12. Anne says:

Yes to the Wirecutter JP Penney sheets (a place I never shop!) The lightweight duvet WC recommends is also excellent.

  13. Emily says:

I don’t remember where I got this recommendation, maybe a weird Buzzfeed article or Apartment Therapy, but these Amazon sheets are incredibly soft and cheap.

    Another vote for JCPenney.

I’ve been using the Ikea sheets for years and I love them. I don’t remember the exact name. They feel kind of stiff out the packaging, but after a few washes it becomes so smooth and soft. I love them 🙂 (and so cheap)

When I lived somewhere cold, I had a set of flannel sheets (from Ross dress for less or something) and I adored them. So warm and cozy.

  16. SJ says:

LL Bean sheets all the way! Got them after the Wirecutter rec and they have held up better than any others I’ve tried.

  17. Jo says:

I recently wanted to buy cooler sheets too and the key is Percale sheets. There are various price points on there but that’s what you want.

  18. S says:

I love Macy brand sheets, which is all I own. But is OP asking for non-iron sheets to curb wrinkles? Not my thing but I think landsend makes them.

  19. Shelly says:

Thanks for the recommendation! I bought the Luxe Ultra set from Macys per your blog and love them so much we’re getting a second set. I’m clicking from here again hoping you get commission again. 🙂

Re: Parachute – I bought a set a few years ago (maybe 2?) and LOVED them initially (swore I got a better nights sleep) but they didn’t hold up. I had to throw them out recently after our feet rubbing wore down the fabric and there were holes!
