End of the Day: Launching ‘Article Club’

Mar 27, 2018

It’s been such a downer of a week.  I have a sinus infection.  The weather has been cold and windy.  I’ve just been feeling sort of blah.  But there have been a few bright spots, so let’s talk about those before launching The Work Edit’s new “article club” (because who has time for another book club?).

Since Kyle and I moved in together, my TV is stuck in a loop: ESPN to CNN, and back again.  But after he goes to bed, I indulge in a bit of guilty pleasure with The Arrangement on E!.  It’s the story of an arranged Hollywood marriage orchestrated by a shadowy “religion,” where everyone has secrets.  A bit soapy, but still highly enjoyable.

When my hair is fried beyond recognition, I typically break out my Olaplex.  It’s the best deep conditioner I’ve ever used.  Ever.  But a few weeks ago, I was on a trip and a blow-dry salon that shall remain nameless heat-beat my hair to within an inch of its life.  With only drugstore options to choose from, I grabbed a sleeve of this Palmer’s Coconut Oil conditioning pack.

For best results, do not apply this product to your scalp.  Instead, apply it from your ears to your ends.  Then, comb it through, and massage it into your ends.

Katie Sturino at 12-ish Style writes a blog for “12is to 18ish women living in a size 2 world.”  I love following her because her content is always fresh and body positive.  Her Instagram is a great reminder that style has nothing to do with size.

You would be forgiven for thinking that the name is probably what attracted me to these relaxing bath salts.  When you have a weird name, anytime you see it, you do a triple take, and then get insanely excited about it.  So when I spotted these bath salts in a Canadian pharmacy, I had to have them.  After several weeks of insomnia, I probably needed them.

They smell diving, like you’re peeling an orange in the shower (which is apparently a cult thing, who knew?).  And to my utter surprise, they actually work.  If I put my phone down, and crawl into a hot bath filled with these babies, I typically have to exit the tub because I’m too sleepy to stay in it.  So word to the wise, be completely ready for bed before you give these a try.

I love Sloane Crosley.  Like if I could have coffee with any woman on the planet right now, it’s her.  Her two previous collections of essays — I Was Told There Would Be Cake and How Did You Get This Number — are two of my favorite reads.  In fact, there’s one essay in HDYGTN that I think about almost daily because it hit so close (too close) to home for me.

I can’t wait for her new book, Look Alive Out There, to come out next week.  So I posted an excerpt to The Work Edit Facebook page to launch The Work Edit Article Club.  Every Tuesday, I’ll post a new article to our Facebook page, and on Friday we’ll discuss our thoughts about the book on Facebook.  We may tweak the format as the Club goes on, but I thought this would be a good place to start.

So come join us!

Love the idea of an “article” book club!

  2. MOnica T says:

I’m one of those people who always wants other people to read the super long New Yorker article I just read so we can talk about it. LOVE the idea of an article club, I think long form articles and essays are the perfect length and focus for people to discuss over coffee.

Thanks for the heads up on the new Sloane Crosby book – got on the waitlist for it at my local library 🙂

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
