Commute: No. 20

Feb 26, 2018

“I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, telling him that if he keeps leaving his dirty underwear on my floor, he’ll be sleeping on the couch.” — Me, last night.

Immobile. This Ask the Manager question had me frozen, mouth agape.

In the Trenches. I need this faux-leather trim trench coat in every color.  It’s a nice mix of slouchy and structured.

Into the Light. Monica Lewinsky, she of 1,000 SNL jokes, is emerging from hiding in the era of #metoo.  Good for her.

Idolized. I need cool shoes for spring.  This paisley ankle-strap sandal, these metallic mules, and these showstopping, work-appropriate Sam Edelman pumps are perfect.

It’s All Good. How to hold it together in an important meeting.

I’m on Board. A sonic-powered foundation brush for super smooth application?  I’ll give it a whirl.

In the Ring. Linda McMahon went from the WWE to the SBA, and she is using her platform to increase the number of women in business.

In Brief. This Uri Minkoff briefcase is the sleekest laptop bag.  But I think this Rebecca Minkoff Bree satchel is more the size I’m looking for.

Up In the Air. How to eat healthy in an airport. Because you can’t eat that much Panda Express.

It’s a Deal. This twist-front top would look great tucked into this bold floral pencil skirt with this simple cardigan.  The whole outfit is under-$200.

In It Together. Black women movers-and-shakers on Capitol Hill have each others backs. We could learn so much from their sisterhood.

What I’m Cooking. These shredded Harissa chicken bowls.

What Made Me Nod My Head. Why we shouldn’t expect Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton to be best friends or rivals.

What I’m Buying. The only button you’ll ever need. (Perfect gag gift.)

Photo of the Day. I just found this photo so calming.  I could stare at it for hours.  The muted colors, the sense of peace.  Wherever this is, I want to go there.

I think that photo is from Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. I have an incredibly similar photo that I took there 10+ years ago while in college. Truly beautiful place!

  2. The photo is Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. I’ve been and it is as calm as it looks 🙂

Hi, New Zealander here. I agree with the others – those are purple lupins on the shore of Lake Tekapo. Google “lupins Lake Tekapo” or “lupins Mackenzie country” for more pics – there are some spectacular ones out there.

Unfortunately the article on holding it together in an important meeting is a not-so-thinly veiled ad for hair product.

I think your picture is of lupine sin New Zealand in the spring (late November). You should go. It is beautiful.

Photo may also be in Chile near Torres del Paine. Looks exactly like photos from my trip there a few years ago. Also used to live in NZ. Could be the west side of the South Islandwhich is very similar in geology and climate (and hence vegetation) to Chile.

Regarding the sonic makeup brush, I’d highly recommend you try the Clarisonic “Sonic Foundation Brush Head”first. They sell it at Ulta and Sephora so easy returns if you don’t like it…also a bit more familiar of a brand. I love my and use it basically every day. Does a surprisingly well job of blending out foundation and liquid/cream bronzer and blush.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
