Ask the Edit: Basic Black Blazers

Jan 2, 2018

Hi Belle,

My go to black blazer is on its last legs.  I need something classic, maybe a little stylish, and under-$200.  I wear this jacket at least twice a week, and I’m hoping you can help me find a good replacement.

Love your blog, Lizette

Shopping for a black blazer can be a maddening experience.  There are so many choices, and almost all of them are wrong.  No, my blazer does not need gold buttons the size of dinner plates.  No, I do not think a zipper front is a good idea.  Thanks, but I’ll pass on the double breasted boyfriend jacket that makes me look like an extra in a Robert Palmer music video.

Sheesh.

I would suggest starting with a classic, mid-price retailer.  J.Crew has this Parke Blazer.  BR has a long-and-lean ponte blazer and a classic-cut blazer (also in tall).   And, of course, Ann Taylor has their classic wool and seasonless stretch options.

My choice, if I were buying for myself, would be this T Tahari blazer with a slightly more modern cut.

For something a little bit different, this WHBM jacket has pleated shoulders.  I own a blazer like this one from Zara and it’s just the right amount of extra.

Need something under-$75?  Don’t miss this Liz Claiborne jacket.  Plus-size?  Try this Talbot’s blazer.  Petite?  This Tahari ASL jacket is great.  Maternity?  Try this sale-priced twill blazer from A Pea in the Pod.

I have that BR ponte blazer and I can highly recommend it. The sleeves were too long for me, so I had to get them shortened, but it is the most flattering blazer I’ve tried on in a long time.

I also own the BR Ponte blazer and agree that it’s a very flattering cut! I’d maybe wait till BR has a sale to buy it though. I got mine before Christmas for 40% off!

I’d go to therealreal.com & search for Elizabeth & James blazers (or other designers). You can find modern fit blazers for under $100 & you knpw they can survive cleaning/wear n tear because everything is gently used. Plus, it’s green shopping:-)

The WOOLF JARDIGAN from MM LaFleur. $195. I’ve had mine in black for 3 years; it still looks brand new and I wear it a lot. It’s probably not the best option if you need a jacket to pair with traditional collared blouses, but I tend to wear drapey fabrics or dresses and it works great with those. It also looks seriously amazing over a nice knit tee with a great necklace. I get compliments almost every time I wear it – it looks seriously luxe and has kept its shape, with no fading or pilling. It is also incredibly comfortable. (I don’t work for LaFleur – I’m just seriously in love with my jacket.)

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
