The Work Edit: December 8, 2017

Dec 8, 2017

Did you see the first giveaway of the Holiday 2017 Extravaganza?  It’s this gorgeous Charlotte Tilbury makeup box.  Enter on my Instagram. (U.S. residents only; I’m working on a Canadian giveaway. Stay tuned.)

Quote of the Day.

“Christmas will always be as long as we stand heart to heart and hand in hand.” — Dr. Seuss.

The Week’s Top Story.

The Depressing Lesson of Sex Scandals. (The Week)

When it comes to sex scandals, the most guilty and least repentant politicians survive, and those who own up to their behavior are crushed.

Is this because if you deny.deny.deny you leave a little room for doubt, and your supporters will fill it with their excuses?  Or is it because too many people still believe that most women are making it up?  Maybe a little bit of column A, and a little bit of column B.

Weekly Reads and Links.

1) Had to have this leopard coat from Emerson Fry. It called to me.  This $62 one is fun too.

2) Robin Givhan: The final days of the ‘power suit’. (WaPost)

3) 25% off at Bloomingdale’s with code FRIENDS.  They have the best cocktail dresses.  I need this lace Betsey Johnson and this sculpted Likely one-shoulder.

4) How much free swag do fashion editors get? A LOT. (Racked)

5) These Sole Society velvet flats are just so pretty, and perfect for the holidays.

6) The 70s feminist manifesto ‘I Want a Wife’ is still relevant in 2017. (The Cut)

7) Anthropologie Must Haves: Botkier ballet flats, a pretty ruffle-knit JOA dress, and this gold foil tee.

8) Why you should say ‘I’m sorry’ less often. (Well + Good)

9) Trying to take your best selfie? Grab this lighted mount or this $10 phone grip.

10) Make your marriage work by turning towards instead of away. (Gottman)

11) Need a strapless bra? This Wacoal is the best one.

12) If you’re feeling depressed or suicidal, text 741741 to speak to a crisis counselor.

The Weekly Ws.

What I Bought Myself. Amazon has great handmade gifts this season. I picked up this darling Boss Lady travel mug.

What I’m Reading. John Grisham’s The Rooster Bar.

What I’m Cooking. White chicken chili.

Photo of the Week.

This photo from @thisisglamorous just proves that the British are better at Christmas than we are.  My family was in London before Easter, and I was blown away by their full-throated embrace for the holiday.  Maybe next year I need to spend some time in London in December.

  1. Catherine says:

Thank you so much for posting the crisis hotline number. This is a very hard time of year for so many people, and in the slew of gift guides and advertisements, I think the opportunity for direct connection and help is often lacking. I so appreciate the thought.

  2. Lauren says:

I think it’s option A mixed with option C (which is that people are more concerned with losing a seat in the House or Senate than holding harassers and pedophiles accountable).

  3. Lindsey says:

That wife article just almost brought me to tears.

  4. Emily says:

I also finally got the Emerson Fry leopard coat and it is sooooo perfect!

  5. Jordan says:

We were in London the week before Thanksgiving and Christmas was already in full swing. Since they don’t celebrate turkey day the season is much longer and more legitimately starts after Halloween and everyone seemed fine with it. Everything, even the pubs, were festive!

  6. SC says:

I think in general, Europe as a whole does Christmas better! We just got back from an 8-day trip to Germany and even before Dec. 1 the pubs and street markets were bursting with Christmas cheer (and boozy holiday drinks, yessss). I think the decor is more refined too: lots of holly berries and piney-smelling greenery (nothing cheap or plastic). Christmas in London is 100% on my bucket list.

  7. Alicia says:

I highly recommend London at Christmas. My mom, sister, and I decided to skip our regular Christmas plans last year after the death of my dad. We had also decided to travel more, in honor of him (traveling and reading were his favorite things and he saw them as essential to understanding other people’s perspectives and the human experience, sorry for the tangent). Anyway, we decided that we’d spend Christmas in London, where none of us had ever visited before, and it was incredible. We did Christmas service at Westminster Abbey, an evening double decker bus tour of all the best Christmas lights in London, hit up the tacky but really fun Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, had a Christmas themed tea at the Dorchester, went to the Christmas holiday spectacular at the Royal Albert Hall, and saw Kensington Palace all the decked out for the holiday. You must go.
