The $9 Striped Tee You Absolutely Need

Behold, what light from yonder window breaks, it is the East, and Land’s End is the sun.

What, too dramatic?

This Land’s End Striped Cotton Crewneck Tee is $9.99.  It is, in a word, a marvel.  I ordered one in November.  I have worn it twice a week since.  And until last week, when I stupidly put it in the wash on the hot setting, it still looked like new.

I cannot tell you how grateful, nay, elated I was when I realized it was not only still in stock, but on sale.  I bought five.  Five, ladies, five.  And I am tempted to buy five more.  I do not want to ever be without this tee.

It fits perfectly.  Just a bit of shape, but not too clingy.  The weight of the fabric is like the old days before retailers started selling inferior tissue tees and pleading “on trend.”  It is a great length, even on my longer than average torso.  And did I mention that since it’s from Land’s End it comes in misses, petite, tall and plus?  Crewneck tees for everyone.  Everyone, I say!

Ladies, for less than the cost of a Sweetgreen salad, you can own a t-shirt that will make you sigh with relief every time you don’t know what to wear.  Because add a pair of distressed black jeans and a flat shoe, and your weekend fashion decisions are made.

But what’s that you say, “Belle, it’s summer, I don’t need a long-sleeve tee.”  Rubbish.  But if you’re sure you don’t need this one, may I recommend this dip-dye, ombre Sailor Tee ($19.99) or this swingy Scoopneck Tee ($29)?  Land’s End for all your basic knit top and t-shirt needs.  Who knew?

XS. So it runs a touch big.

This one isn’t $9, but it’s still a good deal, and elbow sleeve length if long sleeves seem to daunting in the summer: https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=17082&vid=1&pid=787885012

This one is also a nice weight and has a good shape, and I might own it in four colors.

I’ve given up on Gap for basics. The last few tees I’ve purchased to be wardrobe staples have gotten holes in them within the first couple washes (and I’m a religious cold-wash, gentle cycle, hang dry kind of gal). J.Crew, Madewell, etc. had the same issue – even the shirts that weren’t paperthin were constructed poorly. Hoping LE hasn’t gone in the same misdirection as those other brands.

I don’t have the long-sleeve stripe tee, but Land’s End is my first choice for tees. They frequently have sales, so I never pay full price. The quality is better than most options at that price point. They run a little larger than many brands, but not excessively so. Pay attention to the fit description because that affects it (relaxed, fitted, etc.).

How is the sizing? I generally find that LE runs a bit big

I should be a 4-6, bought the XS. So a little roomy, but not huge.

As someone in the 0-2 sizing category, that sizing system drives me crazy. Looks like a nice shirt! Sigh, I guess there’s a reason I never tried to shop at Land’s End before. I got excited when you mentioned Petites but it seems like kind of a joke. Ah well, this is why I read blogs and comments, so I know where to look for the right clothes! 🙂

A word of caution: I’ve had quality issues with LE’s Canvas line, which is supposed to be younger and hipper. I bought a couple of nice looking drapey tees from that line a few years back, and they shrank a ton (washing on cold, no dryer) and got holes in them fairly quickly. Hopefully quality has improved since then.

    • Belle says:

This was the old line, haven’t tried the canvas. But washing on cold and air-drying kept this tee in good shape.

I ordered a trench and a blazer from Land’s End yesterday! Perhaps I’ll see if they can add some of these shirts to my order! I’ll report back when I receive the items.

Land’s End is secretly the best. Their tees, rash guards for those of us who crisp in the sun, and I have to door myself from buying their ponte sheath in every COLO (it’s got pockets! and sleeves!)

    • Anna says:

Are the rash guards hot? I’m tempted to buy one for my vacation in August since no matter how much sunscreen I put on, my shoulders burn to a crisp,, but it’s probably going to be in the 90s. I’d never wear a regular long sleeve shirt, but not sure if rash guards would be cooler.

      • Whitney says:

I wear a rash guard in Belize and am always totally comfortable, both before and after I go in the water with it. (Note that they’re hard to get back on once you’re wet, so I leave mine on until I’m sure I’m ready to ditch it for the day.) I switch between that and a loose cotton button up, but if you want to get in and out of the water, rash guards really are the most comfortable option for sun protection.

(I actually use a sun shirt from Athleta; I didn’t want the super-tight fit that a lot of rash guards have.)

The “regular” size is $9.99, but the plus is $25.99 because of course it is.

Has anyone who wears a size 0 on top tried Lands’ End recently and can advise to sizing? I bought a tee from them a few years ago and ended up donating it because the XS was just too baggy on me. I have a small bust so I can’t fill out any extra room, it just hangs.

    • Anna says:

They have petite sizes. Maybe those would fit better? Their stuff tends to run big, because I think their demographics skew older, more conservative dressers.

I’m a 00/XS and also have a small bust. I ordered the tank version of this top last summer in the XS. It was dirt cheap- maybe $5 or $10?- and I just needed one more item to get free shipping so this was it. It was a tad bigger than I’ve come to expect from other stores like J.Crew, but it really wasn’t bad at all. I did hang dry it and then threw it into the dryer on high heat and that seemed to give it a semi-snug fit. I would definitely recommend buying. Hope this is helpful!

So, uh, if you don’t mind me asking because that’s exactly something I would do… what happened when you put it in the wash on the hot setting?

    • Belle says:

It become shorter by about 3/4″. The rest of it held together well. The torso just shot up a bit.

Thanks Belle. I just bought 4 of these. And I bought 4 of them because I was $1 away from free shipping (I’m in Canada) and I figured if I was going to pay $11 for shipping I might as well get another shirt for $14 instead of paying the shipping. can’t wait to try these. I need some good casual shirts. Do you think you can dress these up for work? I work in a business casual environment- and jean day on Friday.

Lands End is also my secret source for amazing (and washable! with pockets! and the perfect amount of stretch!) sheath dresses. Seriously….try one. Their ponte dresses are comfortable, well made, stylish and look great.

I got a hole in the back seam of one of my dresses! So sad, it otherwise still looks great and is soooo comfy. I might pay to get it fixed (I’m no good with needle and thread).

Yes! Lands End has some great stuff- you just have to be willing to sift through the hundreds of items on their website. I bought a pair of super cute gold sandals from LE on sale last summer- $12- and receive compliments on them all the time. Walking around D.C. in the summer in my Jacks is my idea of torture since they aren’t comfy, but I can happily say that I walked all around the city in my LE sandals last summer and was so pleased with how comfy they are. If anybody is interested, I’ll find them on the website and reply to this comment w/ the link.

I *love* Lands’ End. I’ve found that their sizing is super consistent, as they make many of the same items year after year, just in different patterns or colors. Also, thank goodness for petite sizing – even in t-shirts. I travel a lot for work, and their ponte sheath dresses are a godsend and I buy more every year.

That being said, I’d say don’t even bother with the Lands’ End Canvas line. Sizing and quality are nowhere near as consistent as their main line. The reviews seem to reflect this as well.

I just received two, I don’t feel like they flatter me and the M long is a little big (I usually wear an 8, athletic build). Maybe if it was more fitted or the neckline was different it would work out for my shape. Belle – you said it was shorter after washing on hot. Was it any more fitted? Even the arms are baggy. It’s SOO close.

Great length though. I’m 6′ tall and it’s nearly impossible to find a length like this. Anyone in need of a medium long? I bought two, never worn, never washed. 🙂 not really worth returning when shipping is $8.

I do need to hear more about the sheath dresses with pockets though. They sound fantastic.
