  1. Midwest Gal says:

Belle and readers, I’m prepping for a trip to Croatia and Slovenia in May. I need a shoe for walking around towns but will pack shoes for hiking and dining out. What are your thoughts on Soludos canvas shoes? Are they comfy?

    • Belle says:

I would look at 2 shoes: Those Coach loafers I put up two weeks ago (?) were surprisingly dreamy on London’s cobblestones. I would also look at Rothy’s. I just bought a pair, and they’re kind of amazing.

      • LS says:

It’s intersting that you love your Rothys. I tried one pair and thought they were so flimsy. Like flip-flops but nicer looking.

        • Belle says:

They are not substantial, this is true. At first, I was like, what are these, socks?!!? But then I wore them for a few hours and was like, okay, they’re basically fancy Keds. I do still wish the mesh was interfaced with something to give them some more structure.

  2. I wonder if one of the issues with giving a check at a wedding is that people just don’t have that cash on hand it’s easier to purchase something on credit didn’t have to take that deduction on their checkbook. For my husband and I it was both our second marriage and we were both in corporate or government careers so we just asked our guests to give a donation to charity.

    • Jenn S. says:

That’s a unique idea I hadn’t considered. I bet a lot of people want to be generous on such occasions, but just can’t do it with cash right then and there. Beyond generosity, it might be saving face for some.

As a giver of wedding gifts, I prefer to give registry gifts as a general thing. I’m not anti-cash or anti-gift card, but I like to check the registry and see if there’s something on there that 1) I find interesting/exciting/fun or 2) Own myself and can recommend. It’s more personal.

As a recipient of wedding gifts, I got so much more joy out of the items our loved ones chose for us than out of the ones I purchased after the fact with gift cards to the retailers we registered with. We didn’t get much cash, but then again we had a very small affair (like 45 guests small).

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
