Chic (and Affordable) Winter Coats

Nov 1, 2016

Since it’s officially November, I decided it was time to talk about winter coats.  I know, but do try to keep the groaning to a minimum.  At least we can look chic while we’re shivering, right?

A lovely winter quality is a wonderful wardrobe staple.  Need to run to the pharmacy at 1am?  Throw your gorgeous winter coat over your leggings and a pair of riding boots, and no one will be the wiser.  (Oh come on, I can’t be the only one who has done this.)  A great coat complete any outfit, but they can be so expensive.  Never fear, after the jump my best picks under-$300.

Coats Between $200 and $300.  If this is your price point, you are in luck.  I found several gorgeous options, starting with this classic camel coat from Ralph Lauren.  It’s the perfect mix of preppy and sophisticated. For something a bit more Fifth Avenue, this Mango coat has extra wide lapels and a belted style.  Land’s End’s classic car coat comes in several color choices, including the of-the-moment burgundy.  It also comes in petite, tall, and plus.

Other picks that caught my eye?  This Marks & Spencer Herringbone Duster, and this simple Kristen Blake wrap coat.  For something more unique, I like this olive military coat from Vince Camuto.

Coats Between $100 and $200.  Unsurprisingly, the choices get a little thinner the closer we get to $100, but there are still some great pieces to be had.  This pale pink Mango wool coat is sure to brighten up a dreary day.  This pale beige longline duster (in faux wool) from Misguided  is the epitome of relaxed chic (I own it in mauve.).  And if you’re looking for an easy basic, this Cole Haan signature coat bridges the gap between casual and dressy.

But if I could only pick one coat in this price range, I am absolutely in love with this Kenneth Cole Maxi Wrap Coat.  It’s everything I want: cool, elegant, dramatic.  Yes, please, and thank you.

Plus-size?  I like this sleek grey coat from ASOS with wide lapels.  Petite?  This T Tahari Ella coat is pretty great.

Coats Under-$100.  The air is a bit thin down here.  Under-$100 coats, in my opinion, are usually not well made.  So if you want a warm, basic coat that will last, try one from the list above.  (The exception would be a discounted coat at Land’s End.)  However, if you’re looking for something to wear for fun, like a new color or style, then this is the place to be.

This Missguided faux-wool cape in camel is exactly what I’m talking about.  It’s a great statement piece for when your outfit needs more pizzazz.  Their charcoal belted duster coat with extra-wide lapels is also worth a look.  For a bit of color, try this dusty rose coat from Boohoo.  Plus-size?  Try this navy heather wool coat from Zulily.

I got a great camel wool trench from Uniqlo at a stupid good price almost four years ago and have been using it as a winter coat in DC ever since. I think it was like $80, and it’s still in fantastic shape (though I could stand to reinforce some of the buttons). Although they’re obviously not carrying the same coat now, they have a few nice options for <$200 (and some even <$100).

  2. Great choices, thank you!

For those looking to spend less than $100, your local thrift shop is a terrific option. Depending on the store, you can get some super fab clothes. I lot a ton of weight years ago and my mom built my new wardrobe from the thrift shop she managed. NICE stuff, too. Much with tags still on.

Ha, as a person who sports a trench coat over full only flannel pajamas as a dog-walking outfit at night/in the morning, I am all about the “coat = outfit” school of thought.

I’ve found my local Macys has a pretty good selection. I bought a Tommy Hilfiger brand coat there that has lasted several years. I need an upgrade so this post was timely. Thanks for the suggestions!

I’m writing to concur with the Uniqlo and thrift shop recommendations for the under $100. I happened upon a beautiful coat from Drykorn (https://www.drykorn.com/en/) at my local thrift shop for $40. I also often see Land’s End and other mid range coats at the thrift shop. thredup has some as well. And I still own everything I’ve ever bought from Uniqlo, including the 15 year old sweatshirt I bought on sale for 1100 yen. The quality is always amazing there.

Wait, am I supposed to care about what I look like at the pharmacy at 1am?

I’m so in love with the blue coat shown in the header photo. I wish I knew that one’s brand/could afford it!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
