Ask Belle: Affordable Fall Sweaters

Oct 25, 2016

Dear Belle,

I recently moved from Phoenix to Oregon, and I’m freezing.  I need all the sweaters, however, my budget is limited.  Where do you buy sweaters for >$100?

Cold in Klamath Falls

I faced the same problem when I moved West.  In D.C., I just layered up and waited for spring.  But with the cold, wet weather in the Pacific Northwest, I needed sweaters desperately.  Here are a few suggestions in your price range.

Halogen Embellished Collar Sweater ($69) // Gibson Convertible Fleece Tunic ($54) // Leith Cocoon Cardigan ($75) // Topshop Striped Tunic Sweater ($100)

I find that Nordstrom usually has a pretty good selection of sweaters under-$100.  The four above are all from Nordstrom and they offer varying degrees of warmth.  I really adore the embellishes collar on the sweater at left, and the sweater at right has the perfect amount of Parisian chic.

Other choices include this BP Oversize Pullover and this ladder sleeve crop sweater from Topshop.  Plus-size?  This Lucky Brand turtleneck with a cool intarsia weave caught my eye.

Madewell also has a few selections in this price range.  I like their Riverside texture sweater and their tie-front wrap sweater is the perfect mix of sophisticated and cool.

Lastly, Lord & Taylor has some sweater brands that you don’t see everywhere.  1 State has this great cable and peplum sweater.  I also like their sweater with a sheer yoke for wearing under blazers without looking heavy.  And this BCBGeneration sweater has is striped in rich fall hues.  Plus-size?  They have a good selection of Ralph Lauren basics, like this open front cardi.

Hi Belle – I really appreciate this post as the weather turns. I know that you’ve been experimenting with graphics recently, and I wanted to give feedback that this particular format – with an opaque box and text over the images – is not my favorite. I’m having trouble seeing the examples, and would be more likely to click through if they were more visible. Thanks for your work and always solid advice!

    • Belle says:

Question: Would it be easier if I put the same images in a widget at the bottom? That way you could see the items uncovered without altering the graphics? (It took me a long time to build out this template, and I’m not sure how I would change it. But it’s certainly something I can brainstorm.)

  2. Zella says:

Woolovers! Beautiful quality, great prices, shipping was fairly quick considering it’s coming from England. Wool is amazing at keeping you warm. I’ve even migrated to wool socks (Costco via Amazon). Costco also has fake Uggs that are wonderfully warm.

  3. Drew says:

I live in Oregon, and I’m always cold! Cashmere saved me.

  4. Annie says:

I’m a bit confused – is the reader looking for sweaters over $100 (per her comment of >$100)? You gave examples of sweaters under $100…

    • Anna says:

I think that was an error on the part of the reader. She says she’s on a budget. It wouldn’t make sense to specifically ask for sweaters over $100.

  5. KMB says:

    Belle,
This season, Everlane reduced the price on their cashmere crewnecks to $100. While I’m not terribly fond of the cuffs, the sweaters are as cozy as years past.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
