Ask Belle: SPF Lip Balms

Aug 9, 2016

Hi Belle,

I love my Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm, but it doesn’t have an SPF. Do you have a recommendation for something similar (similar price would be awesome, too!) but with sun protection? I’m trying to be better about taking care of my skin – lips included! 🙂

Thank you so much! BN

I’ve tried a lot of SPF lip balms.  And I have a few favorites, it all depends on your preferences.

For something fun, try eos lip balms.  They come in the cutest containers, smell amazingly fruity, and have SPF 30.  They’re also water resistant for up to 80-minutes.

For something powerful, Banana Boat makes an SPF 50 lip balm.  It’s the strongest one I’ve found that doesn’t feel like an oil slick.

For something tinted, the Neutrogena Revitalizing lip balm wears more like a lip color with an SPF 20.

Here are a few more choices with at least SPF 15.  (As an aside, am I the only one who used to be totally addicted to Softlips chapstick during the 90s?)

I highly recommend the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm – SPF 25! Easily

  2. Jo says:

My lips are very dry lately. I have tried lots of balms which all seem to work about the same. Anyone know of something that really just goes above and beyond typical balms? Thanks!

    • TheLoop says:

Yes, but it’s not a lip balm. It’s the Lansinoh cream which is usually used by breastfeeding mothers to treat cracked nipples. I had a bunch left over so used on my insanely dry lips and it is a dream product, Also safe for ingestion by babies so has nothing toxic. It doesn’t have SPF but you could use it as a night treatment and use a separate lip balm with SPF in the daytime.

  3. Cara says:

I am also a Burt’s Bees fan for regular lip balm, but for SPF I LOVE Mary Kay Sun Care Lip Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15.

  4. That Supergoop balm is everything.

  5. thb says:

Like the Supergoop and Badger Lip Balms. No spf listed on Badger – but organic and allergy sensitive.

  6. Nonymouse says:

My 90s lip-wear alternated between Softlips and Lip Smacker, and bonus if it had a disgusting-to-me-now soda scent.

  7. strin012 says:

Carmex in stick form is my favorite. Have them at my desk, by my bed, in my purse, etc.

  8. Jo says:

Has anyone tried La Mer lip treatment? At $60 for a small tin, I am wondering what’s so special about it.

I haven’t tried the lip stuff, but I splurged on a La Mer face cream last year, and was un-wow’ed. Especially for the price.

  9. A.J. says:

this is not helpful at all but my dentist and oral surgeon both have free lip balm (with SPF) that is better than anything I’ve ever bought. they come in like a dozen scents/flavors and I love all of them. I grab several every time I’m at either office. no shame.

  10. Em says:

The fresh lip balms have spf and come in great colors. They are also moisturizing. Highly recommended.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
