In Boston for the weekend, couldn’t be more excited.  Leave suggestions of things to see in the comments.

***

1) Sarah Brown got pregnant unexpectedly. Now, four months after giving birth, she’s trying to make the U.S. Olympic Team. Damn, girl.  (The Cut)

2) From weddings to the beach, Nordstrom’s under-$100 summer dress selection is on point.  I had to have this Michael Stars midi, racerback tank dress.

3) What makes a politician authentic? (The NYT Magazine)

4) We’ll talk more about it next week, but I bought this Sigma brush set, and I love it, especially the foundation brush.  Which you can also buy separately.

5) The writer believes that motherhood has made her smarter, better and more interesting…but also, profoundly unfree. (Vela)

6) I love a tone-on-tone french manicure.  This Liquid Palisade tape makes it so easy.  Then, just grab your favorite polish (NARS Tokaido Express) and a bottle of matte top coat to create a really unique look.

7) The article that will make you totally paranoid that dry shampoo is making your hair fall out. (The Atlantic)

8) Anthropologie has the best dresses.  I need this lacy Midsummer Maxi dress in my life.

9) Let one of the FBI’s top hostage negotiators teach you how to be a better negotiator (video link). (Digg)

10) Last chance to pick up the $20 grey BR shirt that I have been wearing non-stop with leggings, white jeans, and pencil skirts.  Also, a decent trench for under-$100 is not to be missed.

Tea at the Boston Public Library! Gorgeous view.

  2. Kate says:

Absolutely love the article you posted from Vela Mag. Thank you for posting!

  3. c says:

Drinks at Top of the Hub (https://topofthehub.net/). I think they have live music some nights.

    • Valerie says:

Seconded! Grab seats in the lounge area, not the restaurant area (the restaurant is overpriced, and the lounge is on the same floor with the same amazing views). The cocktails are good.

  4. Monica says:

#5, oh my. When she says that she thinks they will devour her, and never even notice. I have said, felt, cried this same thing. The struggle is real, the road is hard. It’s good to know I am not just amazingly selfish in feeling this way. Someday I hope to be free again!

  5. Polly says:

Grab take out from Life Alive in Cambridge and eat on the city hall lawn next door. A great way to relax and people watch. A bike ride/picnic along the Charles is my favorite way to spend a day.

  6. Rach says:

Drinks at the Hawthorne near Kenmore. Should not be missed!

  7. Valerie says:

@Belle- related to your post a few weeks ago about the Chloe flats, I found these with a similar scalloped edge, in solid leather rather than perforated leather. The reviews are mixed about quality, but for $43 they might be worth a try.

  8. Heather says:

My home town – yay! Newbury Street is MUST – great shopping, cafes, and restaurants! enjoy the bean!

  9. Chloe says:

Welcome to Boston! Skip Top of the Hub and go to Drink instead, a fun little speakeasy kind of place. If you don’t already have dinner plans call ahead and try to snag a table at Sportello (neighboring restaurant – Barbara Lynch spot) and then tell them you’d like a seat at Drink when finished. You can skip the line and after you’re done dinner (great Italian pasta, semi-informal atmosphere) they’ll take you down a secret back way to Drink. Or go to Bostonia for good cheese and great wine.

Try brunch in the South End – Toro, Beehive or Worden Tavern (sp?) are all really good. And the MFA and ICA have cool rotating exhibits. If you’re on Newbury, a hidden gem with a decent wine list (they give you little notes on each glass!) and super reasonable prices is Piattini wine bar.

Stay away from Faneuil Hall on a Friday night 😀 Have fun!

  10. Leah says:

That Vela article makes me very very happy to not have children.

    • Denise says:

I have 2 young children and have to say, while some of that rang through for me, much of it did not. I am not in a creative field though, perhaps that is the difference? I don’t shower alone and there are days I don’t brush my hair, but for the most part even though we’re still in the trenches with young kids I don’t ‘hate my life’. I still work though….so I’ve maintained some balance. I also find her opinion on nannies and child care providers highly unfortunate. Seems to me she might benefit from having some time to peruse her passion…but without the ability to fully trust a child care provider, she’s a bit stuck.

    • Monica says:

While it does ring true for me, it is only one part of the wild world of motherhood. I wouldn’t want to scare anyone who truly wanted to be a parent away from the prospect, it is rewarding for all it’s drudgery. But I also think it’s important that women be honest about the full spectrum of emotion you might experience as a mother.

Also I agree with Denise. The authors view of alternate caregivers is going to keep her in this position much longer than most. The only way I can do this at all is by having several alloparents who are well bonded with my daughter there to care for her and give me support when I need it.

I still enjoyed her perspective, especially since it didn’t reek too much of martyrdom. She knows her mother did the same for her, just like most of our mothers and grandmothers before us.

  11. Jen says:

Copley Square, Newbury Street, and take in some nice views from the charles river esplanade or a walk over the Mass Ave bridge. Island Creek Oyster Bar was always my favorite spot for a special occasion dinner.

  12. Sarah 517 says:

Obviously Mike’s cannolis in the North End! Best enjoyed on a bench down by the water after an Italian lunch

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
