1) What to do when your ambition doesn’t line up with your friends’. Because sometimes, they just don’t get it. (Daily Worth)

2) LOFT has 40%-off new arrivals code SWEET.  I grabbed this adorable dandelion, ruffled shell.

3) She landed her dream job, and then was laid off.  Here’s what she learned. (Marie Claire)

4) The Rebecca Minkoff ‘Becky’ Jacket is still one of my favorites. (No word on whether it will give you ‘good hair.’)  For something similar for less, try this BCBG open front jacket or this

5) The Ledbetter Equality Index ranks brands based on the number of women in leadership roles.  Hey, Rimmel, how do you run a women’s makeup brand with no women? (The Cut)

6) MICHAEL Michael Kors is my favorite mid-price brand.  This pussy-bow blouse is the perfect classic.  His pleated shirtdress is a preppy, casual Friday essential.  And don’t miss his slouchy-chic Signature tote.

7) Author Sloane Crosley on balancing two careers, and when to stop. (The M-Dash)

8) I kind of want to use this pineapple crazy straw cup from Sunnylife as an office water cup.  Not professional?  Fine, I’ll get this bright, flag print coffee cup instead.

9) Working women share tips for improving your finances by tackling big debts. (Corporette)

10) Theory is having a big sale at Gilt.  I picked up this relaxed fit Mloyd dress.  I also like this Pazima dress, but I would shorten the sleeve to 3/4.

11) Your friend didn’t get the job she applied for with your company.  Should you tell her the ‘real reason’ why? (The New York Times)

12) Does your makeup need an end-of-day pick-me-up before you head to happy hour?  Try this Wander Beauty On the Go Illuminator and Bronzer stick and a bit of cream blush.

Looks like the Michael Kors “preppy shirtdress” link goes to a different skirt? (Only asking because I love your recs!)

  2. Lindsay says:

Yes to the article on friends who don’t get your ambition. Sometimes I feel like I have to hide the amount of side work I do just so my friends think I’m normal.

Re: the article on friends and ambition. When I was in grad school (I attended later in life and wasn’t a full time student, so it took 6 years), I felt the same way. I felt I was letting my friends down when I continually declined social engagements, although I explained every time that I understood it must be hard on them. A few relationships didn’t last. Now, even taking 6 years, graduate school was temporary and the article isn’t talking temporary, but I think it’s important to determine your friends’ concern. Are they just feeling neglected? Then I think it’s fair to say, “I know my choices affect you and I’m hoping we can remain friends who just don’t see each other as often.” If it’s another case – they are actually trying to convince you that you should have different goals in life, those friendships wouldn’t last, anyway. Communication that gets to the root cause of their comments can keep important relationships intact and bring to an end those that weren’t healthy, anyway.

  3. Maddy says:

I don’t think that article on women in leadership positions at beauty companies is accurate. Just off the top of my head, I know that Suzi Weiss-Fischmann is a high ranking exec at OPI, which is why so many of the nail polish names include her name.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
