Re: no. 7 – It’s an interesting, albeit uncomfortable, topic.
I think that as long as the worker is 100% consenting to the work then it should not only be decriminalized but be legal. Setting regulations around it (maybe workers need to be licensed or at absolute minimum be tested weekly/monthly/whatever and furnish proof of this) would protect both the workers and the clientele.
Such business could be conducted either as a group (like a brothel type situation seen in Nevada) or as independent operators. Granted, there will still be outliers that circumvent the law and proper process, but given the choice to operate on the up-and-up, I think many women would. Furthermore, making regulated operations legal would enable stricter enforcement of laws as they pertain to operations that refuse to comply.
Making it legal would also open it to taxation. Something that many people – even the government – fail to consider is that this business is going to boom whether we like it from a moral standpoint or not and whether or not it is legal. Millions (at least) are made each year in non-trafficking arrangements, and that money is not being taxed. Subjecting this industry to the same taxation that other businesses and individuals face could have a major impact. It’s hard to say if it would make a big dent in the national debt but I do think the benefits largely outweigh the risks.
Belle, I remember that you recently recommended a DC tailor – can you remind me of the name?
Thanks in advance! If any other DC ladies have recommendations, I would love them. I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and am deciding to tailor a few select pieces. Also my friend may need tailoring for a cocktail dress she is wearing for her wedding (aka VIP, does not want it ruined) and I wanted to pass along a rec.
I have used European Custom Tailoring in Cleveland Park with great success for hemming pants, taking in suit jackets, taking in skirts at the waist and he has always done a beautiful job, including telling me that something didn’t need to be tailored.
