1) Having it all kind of sucks: Why only women would sign on for so much work. (The Huffington Post)

2) The Outnet’s clearance sale is on.  This Iris & Ink wrap effect top, and this Lulu Frost Mosaic ring ended up in my cart.

3) Beware Anthropologie, or you’ll wind up the next J.Crew. (The Washington Post)

4) This H&M black-and-white dress is pretty and perfect for chilly spring days.  This collarless black jacket is an awesome work fashion.  And this lace dress is fun for a Friday night on the town.

5) How to complain correctly and get results instead of eyerolls. (Gawker)

6) NARS ‘Damage’ sheer lipstick is my new favorite.  It’s a great pink-berry for every day wear.

7) What it’s like to be the fat person sitting next to you on the flight, an autobiography. (Medium)

8) I need a gown for a formal event. I’m trying to decide between this Freya dress or renting this fuchsia Theia gown.

9) What kind of Americans don’t get married?  A data set explains the demographics. (Flowing Data)

10) This Jane Iredale pouch is perfect for storing makeup brushes because it allows them to stand up. Her Magic Mitt also takes off all of your makeup without soap or chemicals.

11) Jessica Biel created a restaurant for ‘cool moms.’ These reviewers were hysterically unimpressed. (We Are Mel)

12) The simplicity of Roland Mouret’s dresses never fail to take my breath away.  I mean, come on.

  1. Allison says:

“We tell women to lean in. Because of course, it’s our fault for not taking initiative. Fuck you. I’m leaning so far in I’m falling flat on my face.” My God that’s glorious. Great article pick.

    • Jenn S. says:

Yeah, that definitely spoke to me, too.

I’m torn between admiring her dedication and lamenting the fact that it can take immediately returning to work, pretending you did not just birth a child to not ‘harm’ you.

    • Pam says:

Oh my. This article made me laugh and cry.. So much so true. A description of her typical day sounds like mine!

  2. Kristen says:

    Rent the Theia!

    • Crystal says:

Seconded! (And post Instragram pics!) They’re both lovely, but I give the Theia the edge on cut and color.

  3. pilates princess says:

I rented that Elizabeth & James dress a while back from Rent the Runway (https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/elizabeth_and_james/yasmine_gown). I found it to be *very* unforgiving and a tough fit. It’s the one and only time I wasn’t able to wear something I rented from Rent the Runway. (And I rent often.) I’d recommend the Theia. Also, you can rent the E&J in the orange color from RTR way for $32.50 on your main order, if you wanted to try it.

  4. Min Donner says:

I normally don’t mind exposed zippers, but I find them really distracting/detracting from the Elizabeth and James dress (maybe because there are 2?), which is a shame because I love love love the cut and color. The Theia is beautiful too, but I would be worried that the cut – is that considered a mermaid? – would be less flattering than the Freya. So I would go with whichever bothers you least – exposed zipper or mermaid bottom.

  5. Sarah says:

$31 for a Cobb Salad?!! I’ll remember this if I ever go insane and think I’ll fit in in LA.

  6. wellfedfred says:

Friends don’t let friends wear exposed zippers.

  7. Cait says:

I don’t get the exposed zipper trend- not only on otherwise nice dresses, but so many nice blouses have them in the back! Who decided this was a good thing to add to clothing? #teamhiddenzipper

  8. Elz says:

I vote for renting the Theia. I just rented a pink gown from RTR and it was a hit. Plus, so easy to find yourself in pictures!

  9. Jenn S. says:

Another vote for the Theia, here.

  10. Tasha says:

Am I the only one who LOVES the E&J dress? I adore the back! It’s a great touch of fun on an otherwise simple dress.

  11. Sarah says:

Anyone on here used the “Magic Mitt” I’m very intrigued…

How to Wear It: A Summer Shirtdress

A girlfriend texted me Saturday with a question that was uniquely D.C. Her office is no longer suits and sheath dresses, but it’s not jeans and athleisure either. “Can an office be ‘semi-formal’?,” she pondered. “What do I wear for that?!” Enter the shirtdress, the solution for summer.

Nora Ephron was right: I feel bad about my neck. As I move through my forties, the creases have turned into chasms. The skin sags like a pair of sweatpants with aging elastic. It’s not great. But it’s just a natural part of getting older. Over the past year, it feels like I’ve tried every […]
