Two Ways: The Basic Striped Tee

Jan 25, 2016

Shirt: H&M Striped Cotton Top ($25)

Left, Sweater: 321 Short Sleeve Sweater ($306) // Pants: Tibi Anson Flare Pants ($350) // Bag: Rebecca Minkoff Textured Leather Tote ($123) // Shoes: Vince Camuto Nihal Pump ($70) // Necklace: Kenneth Cole Black Stone Necklace ($52)

Right, Coat: Le Ciel Blue Coat ($508) // Earrings: DvF Cut-Out Hoops ($48) // Top: Express Tie-Neck Blouse ($98) // Clutch: Clare V. Leopard Clutch ($245) // Jeans: NYDJ Marilyn Straight Jeans ($114) // Shoes: Nine West Onlee Flat ($69)

Several years ago, I bought a heavy weight striped tee shirt and it quickly became a staple in my wardrobe.  It’s a simple piece that can be dressed up or dressed down.  I like the shoulder detail on this H&M top.  This Topshop tee is also a great staple (also in maternity).  Plus-size?  Try this Ralph Lauren top.  Petite?  J.Crew Factory has a nice striped tee.

From the Left.  Navy and black together, always a favorite of mine.  Layering a striped top under a colored sweater or heavy crepe blouse is a great way to cover your arms in winter without adding a jacket.  You can also wear the striped top under a short sleeve sheath dress (like this cornflower Elie Tahari dress) if you are so inclined.

Flare leg pants and wide leg pants are very popular right now.  For something more affordable, LOFT is the place to go.  I love these Julie fit pants.  For something really dramatic, try these Chelsea28 wide legs.  Plus-size?  Try these Halogen wide leg trousers.

I kept the shoes and the bag very simple.  I love the t-straps with this outfit for something a bit different.  This bag is bound to sell out at that price, so if it does, try this Tignanello Pretty Pockets satchel.

Long necklaces are the staple of my jewelry wardrobe.  This black stone necklace is great.  I also like this long Kenneth Jay Lane tassel necklace.

From the Right.  Casual Friday looks its very best in this pulled together casual outfit.  It mixed color, print,  and texture to make a classic outfit.

A chiffon tie neck worn under the stripe tee lightens up the cotton top.  The Express top above is a good buy.  If you want the tie neck accent, but not the bulk, try this Lafayette 148 top.

I’m trying to move on from skinny, low-rise jeans.  Boy, is it hard.  These NYDJ Marilyn jeans give you a slightly higher rise and a slim/flare style.  I also like these 7 for all Mankind Ginger flares.  Plus-size?  Try these NYDJ Billie mini-bootcut jeans.

For the accessories, I like the red flats for a bit of color in a sea of neutrals.  I added the leopard clutch to give the outfit even more spirit.  Need a cheaper one?  Try this Sam Edelman zip pouch.  The hoop earrings from DvF give you the drama of a hoop in a lighter iteration.  I also like these small gold hoops from Kenneth Jay Lane.

Lastly, I topped the look off with a camel coat.  Always a favorite.  Need a cheaper one?  Try this oversized camel coat from Nasty Gal.

I think I’m still living in the past. I always thought black and navy couldn’t be paired together, same as black and brown. But I see here, it’s really chic! I always wonder what to wear with my navy blouses, or navy pants, now I know.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
