Ask Belle: Simple Updos for the Office

Jan 4, 2016

Hi Belle,

The weather is so wet this winter and it’s killing my hairdo.  Ponytails aren’t getting the job done.  Can you recommend a hair style that will work for the office and hold up in the rain?

Carrie

My hair barely touches my shoulders these days, so I feel your pain.  When it’s raining and cold, it’s much easier to pull it up.  Here are a couple of styles that you can try.

I like the simplicity of this braided style.  It looks pretty easy to do, but it’s certainly not boring.  I also like that it works on medium-length hair.

This is a really pretty updo; I like the interwoven headband.  This one, from Forever21, has gold leaves along the band.

If your hair is on the shorter side, this tutorial is a good one.  It’s really easy and can be freshened up during the day to keep it looking good.  A good teasing brush will go a long way.

Any tips on how to avoid the poofed-up mushroom-head thing that always happens to me when I attempt style #2? It’s a beautiful style, but I can’t get the headband to sit still long enough to wrap hair around it before it starts pushing the rest of my hair up into a weird poof.

I’m super excited to try option #3 as I’m growing my hair out right now and my hair is about that length. I’d love to see more posts like this!

I tried #1 this morning and loved it! Thanks Belle 🙂

Since you tried and loved it, can you help me understand how Step 3 goes into Step 4? I cannot figure it out and there is no text associated with the photos when you click through!

I was wondering the same thing! Do you just pull the braid strands loose? And how do you tuck in and secure the end of the braid?

And what keeps straight and slippery hair in this kind of style?
