1) Six ways to win at office politics.

2) A foldover clutch bag with a tassel-accent is perfect for fall.  This ASOS clutch comes in pale beige or black for just $50.

3) Human of New York is telling the stories of Syrian migrants to help shed light on the refugee crisis.  Some of the stories are incredible.

4) These teal Madewell flats just move to the top of my must-have list.

5) It’s not your imagination, single ladies; there literally aren’t enough men out there.

6) Anthropologie is a great source for unique sweaters.  I love this black sweater with a felted floral accent; it’s modern, but pretty.  I also like this cowl-neck sweater that is the perfect mix of relaxed and chic.

7) Refinery29 shows facial massage techniques to improve circulation, healing, and brightness.  Need a sheet mask for the de-puffing massage?  I love Dr. Jart.

8) Don’t miss Baublebar’s ‘polished organics’ collection for sophisticated, natural look.  I love this lapis ring and this soft green cubist ring.

9) Need a home office but you’re short on space?  The Everygirl has tips for building your workspace.

10) The Outnet has a lot of nice dresses.  For work, I love deep burgundy dress from Goat (a Kate Middleton favorite).  For play, you cannot miss this jaw-dropping MSGM dress.

11) The Lighthouse recreates a conversation with that annoying foreign traveler who seems to go everywhere but has the same experience every place she goes.

Eye Candy. For a piece of eye candy, this Day Birger et Mikkelsen lace dress is an affordable $350.

Re #5: there’s been a lot of commentary on dating and marriage in China, where men outnumber women. You would think this means women have an easier time, but it turns out that being *more* educated often works against women because men don’t want to marry someone more educated than they are. And there is actually a term in Chinese for “leftover women,” referring to any unmarried women in their late 20s.

HONY’s coverage of the refugee crisis has been absolutely heartbreaking, but it’s so important for our eyes to be open to what is truly happening.

Tough to comment on #5, I can’t imagine being in a situation where there is no one loving and loveable and available. Good people come from all walks of life, hopefully his comment about it being more of a step down to date an asshole with a degree and money than to date a good person without hits some people where it counts.

Yes! I don’t see why having a college degree is required to date someone with a college degree.

Also, unless I just missed this (I admit to skimming the article, as the title did not match the article IMO and that annoyed me), one big reason that men aren’t graduating from college at the same rates women are is that they don’t *need* to in order to make a decent living. Or outearn a number of women, for that matter. IT (to use a catch-all term that can encompass a lot of different types of jobs) is a good example of a male-dominated field in which it’s not uncommon to lack a college degree and still make middle-class money.

My dark under eye circles have been the bane of my existence since I was 12. Is the cause lack of sleep? Dehydration? Sinus issues? Stress? Who the hell knows. But there they are, every day, telling the world that I am an exhausted working Mom.

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
