Ask Belle: White Denim for Fall

Sep 8, 2015

Hi Belle,

White jeans for fall…how?  Need styling tips.

Emily

It’s time to let go of the idea that white should not be worn after Labor Day.  White it crisp, it’s classic, and it deserves a place in every season.  And if you’re looking to bring the color into your fall wardrobe, denim is a great place to start (esp. since most of the white styles are on end-of-season sale).

Jeans: Paige Skyline Skinnies ($112)

Upper Left, Top: J.Crew Placed Stripe Shirt ($50) // Coat: BR Military Parka ($178) // Bag: BR Double Pouch Crossbody ($150)

This look–a striped tee, an olive jacket, and denim–is one that I wear often during the early spring and fall.  It’s casual, comfortable, and still chic.  Plus, the big pockets on the jacket mean that I don’t need to carry a purse when I run errands.  But if I did need the room, this BR crossbody would be a great choice (Old Navy has a smaller version.).

Looking for a less expensive jacket?  This $50 Modcloth jacket is a nice option.  For plus-size ladies, this Lucky Brand jacket is worth a look.

Right, Sweater: Vince Teal Sweater ($531) // Vest: H&M Fine Knit Vest ($29) // Belt: BR Cognac Belt ($49)

Vests are back.  And while they’re not high on my shopping list, an affordable one in a flattering shape could be a nice addition to your wardrobe.  Think of it as an alternative to a light jacket or long cardigan.  I also like this structured, trench-style Trouve vest and this grey, faux-fur vest from River Island.

I really wanted to incorporate teal here, but there were so few sweaters that weren’t on a mannequin.  I much prefer this v-neck Halogen sweater to the one in the photo.  If you want something more lightweight, try this longform tee from Anthropologie.  And speaking of Anthro, I adore this teal space-dye tunic sweater.

Bottom Left, Sweater: Iris & Ink Grace Sweater ($210) // Bag: Milly Astor Clutch ($136) // Shoes: Ambra Lace Up Flat ($295)

I wanted to show in outfit in a soft palette of neutrals.  This blush and grey and silver outfit is pretty and feminine but still relaxed.  I love the silver flats for a bit of pop.  For something less pricey, Boden makes a silver t-bar flat and Steve Madden has a silver pointed toe flat.

This turtleneck sweater is an interesting pale platinum.  It has a pink undertone that makes it really soft.  For a less expensive grey sweater, Forever21 has a long grey turtleneck.  As for other color choices, this Gap Merino turtleneck comes in both a soft, heather oatmeal and a deep plum.

I love white jeans with an oversized black turtleneck sweater and booties. So glad I’m no longer “breaking the rules” when I wear it.

I bought the BR green military parka when I was in the UK last month and it was cold (and raining, when I really needed a hooded jacket!) It’s really soft and layers well. Make sure you size down, as it runs a full size large, even when worn over sweaters.

Right now BR is doing a 40%-off sale, wish I had gotten a discount when I bought it!

What shoes do you wear with the upper left outfit? I would love to keep my white jeans in rotation year round–thanks for the ideas!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
