Morning Line: August 17

Aug 17, 2015

We talk a lot about wardrobe staples on the blog.  But how do you know when a piece will become a staple?  In my experience, I buy an inexpensive item and wear it so often that I upgrade to a nicer version of the same piece.  This week, the morning post will feature Belle’s work wardrobe staples for under-$75.

Charlotte Russe Pleated Tie Neck Blouse ($25)

I love a tie-neck blouse.  It looks great under a v-neck cardigan or a blazer.  You can also wear it on its own tucked into a colored pencil skirt.

This blush-colored tie-neck is lovely.  For neutrals, I think white and navy are the most versatile choices.  Want a little color?  This sleeveless tie-neck from 1.State comes in a lovely royal blue.  I also like this Halogen blouse in colors or prints (petite and plus, as well).

Already love a tie-neck and looking to upgrade?  In the $150-range, I found this lovely Bailey44 tie-neck in a deep green.  And for $275, I absolutely love the sheer sleeves on this Alice + Olivia blouse.

You’ve mentioned that you wear these untied. Can you post a few examples of how you might wear this? I like the idea of a bow blouse, but I always feel like I look like an old school secretary or PTA mom when I wear one. How can I do it and look modern?

    • Amanda says:

I think Belle once mentioned that she knots instead of tying a bow, which is what I do too. I often have to get the ties shortened as a result, but that’s a quick fix at the tailor.

For an example, see the additional photos on the Nordstrom product page for the Halogen blouse she links to above. The knot looks more modern to me, but you can tell in these pictures that the ties are way too long (dangling below waistline).

    LOL at this skirt.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
