Ask Belle: Curling Iron Recommendations

Jul 20, 2015

Hi Belle,

Can you recommend a good curling iron that costs less than $75?  I went into Ulta to look for one and the sales person kept pushing a $200 iron me.  It’s.a.curling.iron.

Thanks for your time, LG

Choosing a curling iron isn’t just based on price, it’s also based on purpose.  Certain irons are good for ringlets and curls, others are good for achieving a light wave or a slight bend.

Looking for tousled waves or beach curls, try a clamp-free iron like this Remington Teardrop iron.  You may also want to buy a heat-resistant glove until you get the hang of it.

If you’re looking for an iron with a clamp, I like this Hot Tools Professional iron.  If you prefer a ceramic iron, I think this Conair tourmaline iron is a good option.

If anyone has other recommendations for affordable curling or flat irons, please leave them in the comments.

    Ladies,

What’s your favorite straighter under $100? Burnt my old friend out in Europe by using the wrong outlet 🙁

  2. NuMe’s curling wands are outrageously priced BUT they ALWAYS have a deal going! They recently had a promo where you could get a wand for $38 plus a shampoo and conditioner (normally $219!) Sign up for emails and wait to strike!I have a couple and really love them!

I love the Babyliss Pro Porcelain series. You can find it on Amazon for around $50. I have straight fine hair that is curl resistant (example:a perm wouldn’t hold in the 90’s I blame my mother LOL). This is the only one I have found that will maintain curl in my hair for a good price. It has adjustable heat settings which are important for healthy hair. Good luck in your search.

I’ve never been able to master an actual curling iron, so I use a flat iron instead. I also have straight, fine hair that won’t hold a curl, but the flat iron curls have made it super easy and they hold!

I use the Conair Infiniti Pro 1″, and it’s amazing. Target has it right now for $27.

I’m curious if a more expensive curling iron really does hold the curl better? I have long, fine hair and my hair goes flat in 20 mins. I would definitely invest in a good curling iron if I knew my hair would hold a curl better. I currently use a con air 3/4 that I probably paid $20, but i’ve had it for at least 5 years.

I love the curlipops textured curling wand! I got mine at Targer but Ulta sells it too. https://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod11241021. It’s great for fine or slippery hair. I also love it because it’s so easy to use — this is my first successful curling iron experience.

  7. Emily says:

I have the John Frieda Loose Curls 1 1/4 Inch Curling Iron (purchased from Amazon for under $25 and free shipping) and it is amazing. It has various heat settings and creates the perfect waves. The same iron comes in different barrel sizes depending on the type of curl you are looking for!

I recently bought the kiss instawave curling iron and it’s the only curling iron that’s ever worked on my straight hair. I got it from ULTA. The coolest part about it is that it wraps the hair around the iron for you by spinning. It sounds scary but it’s awesome.

  9. Heather says:

I live by Helen of Troy. Its a good brand that will last for years.

    I’d recommend Karmin 😉

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
