Beat the Heat with a Chic Updo

Apr 23, 2015

Spring and summer weather can make styling your hair a crapshoot.  Some days, you’ll encounter high heat and humidity that will crush your coif faster than a lightning strike.  Other days, it’ll be raining with blustery winds.  While this simple Gibson Roll is still my favorite anyone-can-do-it updo, the hairstyle below from Makeup Wearables is equally fantastic.

If the graphic image isn’t cutting it, she also offers a video tutorial that you can watch.

It took two tries to get this the way I wanted it.  Part of the issue is that I have fine hair.  To pump up the volume, I used Drybar’s Southern Belle mousse and the concentrator attachment for my Harry Josh blowdryer to give the roots a lift.  Then, I used Cricket teasing comb to add even more volume.

I think my hair’s too thick for this. I’ll give it a try though!

    • Abigail says:

Caroline – Have you tried Goody Simple Style Spin pins? I used to think my thick, heavy hair was a lost cause, but these pins changed that! I have 4 Spin Pins, and 6 Minis, and now most up-does are achievable!

      • Caroline says:

The problem’s more that it’s hard to twist a thick roll of hair into a bun (unless it’s super long). I’ve always had trouble with that.

        • Jen W. says:

Instead of wrapping the bun, with shorter, thick hair, you might try splaying the ponytail around the elastic (with all the ends sticking out). Then use the top layer (step six) to cover and tuck the ends in. Just a thought. (Also, the spin pins are a must!!)

  2. Anna says:

Spin pins are amazing. I have long, layered not thick hair and live by them. They even stay in when I run or workout and don’t yank on my scalp like a ponytail. They actually might be better on thicker hair since I notice they’re more likely fall out when my hair is more slippery.

On this up-do though, it’s a little disingenuous to say it takes 2 mins, when clearly her hair is styled and curled beforehand. If I just woke up and tied my hair back like that, it’d look like a dinky blob on my neck.

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
