Ask Belle: Stylish Raincoat Suggestions

Apr 8, 2015

Dear Belle,

Love, love, LOVE the blog. I’m moving to London, and that means even more rain than dreary Spring DC. Where can I find raincoats that are flattering and make me look like I’m actually living in the city and not out hiking in the woods?

(Bonus points for hoods!)

Thanks, Abby

Now that I live in a wetter climate, I appreciate the power of a good raincoat.  Sometimes a twill trench just won’t cut it.  When choosing a raincoat that is more office than hiking trail, you have two basic styles to choose from: trench and slicker.  Here are a few options in each type.

London Fog All-Weather Trench ($125)

This London Fog trench comes in four colors, and boasts a hood.  If you’d like something brighter, this coral French Connection trench is a gorgeous pop of color.

Gallery Turnkey Coat ($158, also in petite)

This jacket has a style that’s both sophisticated and cool.  It has a relaxed vibe.  This Wetlands jacket from Athleta also has a style that bridges both worlds. And this packable jacket from Shelli Segal is good for those who travel frequently or those who want to throw a jacket in their car for emergency use.

Also, if you’re looking to go all-in on the water-proofing, this Topshop rain coat is made from an old school, plastic in frosted black.

Plus-size? Try this button-front coat from Gallery.  I also like this relaxed Michael Kors jacket and this London Fog hooded trench.

I own a Helly Hanson coat and I absolutely love it. There’s a variety of colors too. I own the coral one and it’s fabulous. https://shop.hellyhansen.com/us/item/w-kirkwall-rain-coat-62212/?t_type=src&COLOR=345%20ESSENTIAL%20YELLOW&t_type=cat

I lived in my black Michael by Michael Kors trench for the three years I lived in London. It had a hood and removable liner, meaning it was warm enough for all but the coldest few weeks a year!! You’ll also learn to ALWAYS carry an umbrella (although I found Brits tended to never have one when they needed it)!

I was just at REI the other day and saw this darling trench raincoat. I think the tulip hem gives it a little something extra. And REI is such a great company to buy from – they really stand behind their products. https://www.rei.com/product/842796/rei-kyoto-trench-rain-jacket-womens

I have had great experiences with nau coats – they are well made, flattering, and use recycled materials. I love the two I have and stalk the sales!

Have you looked at the rainfall averages in London? They’re actually lower than DC. It’s really not as dreary as it’s made out to be (I lived there for a year). I actually find DC much drearier, especially in the fall when we go days without sun. It probably rains many more days in London, but it rarely rains all day. I would definitely go for a functional trench that doesn’t scream raincoat over one that looks more utilitarian. You’ll feel kind of silly when the rain lets up and your still wearing a raincoat. And yeah, in case you were thinking about getting a pair, my friends thought galoshes were ridiculous.

    • I agree, a regular trench really should be just fine. W/r/t the comment below about shopping there, just remember it can be more expensive. The dollar is really strong right now so it’s not as bad — but American contemporary brands are super marked up there.

If you’re moving to London, I’d shop there, much more sophisticated and fun fashions. So many department stores to choose from, love, love, love Selfridges.

  7. mimi says:

Whoops, meant to add that yeah no one wears wellington boots unless you live in the country on a farm.

  8. Tasha says:

I, too, lived in London and can say it’s about equal to DC on rainy days but with significantly less humidity (bonus). One recommendation I do have for you though is to get a small umbrella. There are so many people rushing past you on the pavements and in a hurry to get down in the tube – don’t be the gal who smacks others in their faces with a wet umbrella by mistake.

  9. Jill says:

I love the travel raincoat suggestion. Thanks for thinking is us road warriors.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
