1) What is the key to success?  Research suggests that it’s not IQ, talent, attractiveness, or social skills; it’s a quality researchers are calling “grit.

2) On Instagram, everyone asks who sells my favorite pumps. I just found them on eBay, available in most sizes. Don’t like ankle straps? They also come in a pump.

3) Harper’s Bazaar has an interesting piece about “opting out” of motherhood.

4) H&M has a lot of fun casual coats. This short, navy utility-parka is a great basic. This over-sized rust-colored jacket is really unique. I also like this white biker jacket for something more fun.

5) Scientists at JPL believe the state of California has one-year worth of water left.

6) I lived in Supergoop’s Sunscreen Oil with Meadowfoam last summer.  A little goes a long way, and it kept my skin well moisturized.  Need a drugstore dupe?  Try L’Oreal Sublime Sun Oil Spray.

7) This is one of those weeks when there is too much on the calendar.  I’m hoping this easy yoga pose will help me relax.

Legs-up-the-wall pose is also great for relieving menstrual cramps and post-exercise leg soreness. I used to do it for at least 10 minutes after every weekend long run when I was training for longer races.

  2. Thank you thank you thank you for #3. I could have written it myself.

  3. Kate says:

Wow, “grit.” I guess it sounds boring to say you have a strong work ethic these days. I wonder if people are describing themselves as “grit ninjas” yet on their resumes.

Re: #5, my friends in San Diego get their drinking water from Colorado. Scary stuff.

  4. Jenn S. says:

Thank you for sharing #3. I feel like the Harper’s piece leaves some room for more, so I’m looking forward to the book and am anxious to read it.

I got married last summer and even prior to the wedding we were already being pressured to have children…and we do not wish to do so. It is infuriating to think about how many people think they have a say in our lives and futures, or that I need to, “just get over it,” and have kids for their satisfaction (seriously what the hell is that).

  5. TheLoop says:

I like Harper’s piece but I wish writers who write about their choice to not have children not assume that having kids means not being able to do anything else meaningful in your life. I am a mom but that doesn’t mean my child replaces everything else in my life. I get a joy from my career that nothing else can replace. And I also love traveling and catching up with friends and I do find time to do all that. And there are plenty of teachers who are also mothers and are able to “contribute to young people’s lives” and “feed their souls.” Not being a parent doesn’t automatically make you a better teacher just as being one doesn’t either. I would hope that there are better ways to talk about your choice to not have kids without assuming all parents’ lives are basal and devoid of intellectual meaning. Also, let’s just move away from the stereotypes that playing with dolls indicates a maternal instinct. This is 2015.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]

The Find: My Best Workout Shorts

For eight years, I have worn the same workout shorts. Every year, an influencer tries to sell me new shorts. I order them. I try them on. They pale in comparison to the shorts I already own. I return them.
