Guest Blogger: Spring Beauty Trends for the Office

Mar 12, 2015

Kara Manos is the beauty blogger behind Politics of Pretty.  So when I was curious what makeup trends would translate from the runways to the cubicle farm, I asked for her input.  Here are here tips for being on-trend and professional this spring.

Spring Beauty Essentials

Makeup. “Less is more” was a recurring theme on the spring runways. Models at Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch and Jason Wu sported little to no makeup and just a hint of pinky-nude lipstick and blush. Trust me when I say, if you put an emphasis on your skin routine, you can truly embrace a “no makeup” makeup look at work.

Start with a hydrating moisturizer (right now I’m obsessed with Glossier Priming Moisturizer, a soft buildable hydrating cream). Two or three times a week apply a moisturizing and toning mask (I can’t live without my Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask, you can actually feel it working).

For a polished look, focus on the essentials: A champagne shadow gives you just the right amount of shimmer (my favorite is Stila Eye Shadow in Kitten). If you prefer a matte finish, I highly recommend Sonia Kashuk Eye Couture in Eye on Neutral (easy to blend and easy on your wallet). Apply a few coats of long-lasting mascara that will separate and define lashes without smudging. Personally, I can’t live without my Covergirl Clump Crusher Extensions Lashblast Mascara—the formula is buildable and doesn’t leave my lashes feeling stiff and it’s easy to remove at night with a gentle cleanser.

Instead of applying foundation to your entire face, focus on target areas you want to cover up; or, opt for a tinted moisturizer. Add a swipe of blush and a tinted lip for a barely there finish (right now I’m coveting Stila Convertible Color Palette, a dozen dual lip and cheek cream options that you can stash in your satchel for touch-ups). Notice I don’t mention eyeliner? Exactly. Less really is more.

Hair. The spring runways sent a strong message to women everywhere: start growing out your bobs and lobs because long hair is back. I guess that’s perfect timing for me (I’m growing out my tresses for my upcoming wedding). Longtails were spotted on at Ralph Lauren, Jason Wu and Cushnie et Ochs to name a few, and is easily attainable requiring just a few essentials. For much needed ponytail height, use a butterfly hair clip or bobby pins to prop up your pony—this will keep your updo from sagging throughout the day. L’Oreal Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray is my tried and trusted go-to for soft and shiny finish.

Nails. Sheer, light hues that are clean and understated, yet modern and refined, was a popular theme on the spring runways. I’m huge fan of this nail trend because I never had the time or patience for nail art and this look is perfect for the office. Deborah Lippmann’s spring Whisper Collection boasts four sheer hues that enhance your nails for a polished look. On a budget? Essie’s Cashmere Matte Nail Trio collection is equal parts fashion forward and affordable.

Kara, the Guest Blogger, is engaged. I, the woman who hasn’t been on a second date since Bush was in office, is not. Just clarifying.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
