Ask Belle: Gorgeous Gold Rings

Feb 9, 2015

Dear Belle,

My sister moved to Europe recently, and we’re very close (emotionally, not geographically of course). We decided to get “friendship rings” when she moved. We got these rings with the other’s first initial. However, after daily wear for the past few months, the gold has faded to a sad pink-y copper.

We’d like to replace the old rings with a cute everyday ring that is simple enough to go with any outfit and won’t fade quickly. My budget is under $200, preferably around $100. Is this possible?

 Thanks! -N

It’s so difficult to find good jewelry these days.  So many retailers used the recession as an excuse to cripple the quality of their goods, and none of them seem to want to bounce back.  Price seems to be no object; I’ve made disappointing purchases in every price range from $20 to $200.  But here are a few options that might work for you.

If you’re looking for another initial ring, I’ve heard good things about the Jacquie Aiche brand.  I also like this starburst ring and this mini-claw ring from the same designer.  This Zoe Chicco ring is another great option.

Sarah Chloe Heartbeat Ring ($98)

Sarah Chloe makes a heartbeat ring that’s another sentimental option.  She also makes it in a necklace.

If you want to move away from the initial ring, I would choose something classic and wearable.  This Anna Beck Gili ring is fantastic.  Actually, all of the Anna Beck rings are fantastic.  I also like Melinda Marie’s designs, especially this Prue stacking ring.  This feather ring is also fun.

Catbird’s Alphabet rings are great (although they occasionally snag). https://catbirdnyc.com/shop/product.php?productid=17037&cat=297&page=1

  2. Has anybody tried the catbird for J Crew (or the brand generally)? They have some cute simple gold rings:

I have a catbird ring. It’s good quality and stylish, but I’m not sure it was worth the price. But it has held up remarkably well considering how much it gets banged around.

Check out the work of independent designer Wendy Brandes – she has a diffusion line of pieces that are in the price range and some are very witty and cute – it also includes letters in full and miniature in solid sterling silver.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
