1) I watch and read a lot of murder mysteries.  A lot.  I have never read anything like the story of how Italian police solved the murder of Yara Gambirasio in my life.  It’s truly captivating.

2) Maiden Lane makes stylish and affordable shoes.  I adore these silver mid-heel pumps.  These tan and snakeskin heels are hot.  And if you’re in the market for flats, don’t miss these ankle strap flats in black and tan or these sleek grey d’Orsay flats.

3) Because I’m Addicted has the skinny on how to wash your cashmere sweaters properly.  This special detergent should help take care of your valued knits.

4) Was your New Year’s resolution to get in shape?  I love Old Navy’s drapey tops for breathability.  I also like the wider straps on this charcoal grey compression tank.  And this cowl-neck sweatshirt is so chic, I would wear it all the time.

5) A town in West Virginia is a cell-phone and wi-fi free zone due to a nearby government telescope.  As a result the town has become a haven for people with “electrosensitivities.”

6) Gilt is having a Narciso Rodriguez sale.  Pure eye candy.  This peplum dress is at the top of my list.

7) I’m on the hunt for some new undoes.  Refinery29 had three interesting ideas.  This sleek Pinterest photo also reminded me of the 90s-obsession that was the Topsy Tail.  This loose chignon also caught my eye.

8) Anthropologie always has a fun selection of books.  The Love Poems of Pablo Neruda would make a good Valentine’s Day gift. They also have the memoir of Begdorf personal shopper, Betty Halbreich.

9) How often should you wash your bra?  WhoWhatWear has the scoop.  Also, speaking of bras, how cute is this one?

10) Ever go back to a beauty product and wonder why you quit using it? That’s how I feel about Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner in Black Mauve Ink.

11) Awards season has me in the mood for gowns.  This open-back Stella McCartney is sublime.  And this Rouland Mouret?  Perfection.

12) The New York Times posted their 52 places to visit in 2015 list.  Some interesting choices, but I take issue with the inclusion of Zimbabwe.  Putting money in Robert Mugabe’s coffers is not high on my to-do list.

I live in that cowl neck sweatshirt from Old Navy (I have both the black and the grey) my only complaint is that the sleeves are a little short on my long arms.

  2. Lily says:

The best thing to wash delicate knits in is Eucalan or Soak, both of which are used extensively by hand-knitters (who have both emotional and financial skin in the game!)

  3. H. says:

If someone is in the market for silver mid-heel pumps, I can’t rave enough about these from WHBM: https://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/product/silver-metallic-pointed-toe-heel/570109879. Cheap (even cheaper if you get some other stuff to get the $20-off-$80 that just recently got emailed to me) and SO COMFORTABLE. I recently wore them to a bachelorette party and was able to walk and dance all night (and I am terrible at wearing heels).

  4. Beamed and Confused says:

Question resulting from the Bra Washing Link. The article featured some beautiful soft cup bras, but what is the point of a soft cup bra? I don’t understand when you can wear them besides at home – and then, what’s the point? Can someone help me out? — This is coming from a B cup w/ perpetual headlights, so I shy away from anything that doesn’t offer enough thickness/coverage to dim the high beams.

    • Monica says:

From a D-cup: I avoid ANY additional padding in my underthings, it’s hard enough to look professional and not va-va-voom without adding to the problem. But, I don’t have the high-beam problem unless it’s cold, then I’m usually wearing a cardigan where I can be discrete. Maybe they make removable soft cups so you could buy unlined underthings and still use them out of the house?

    • Amy says:

Ditto to this. I’m a 32D, I have “perpetual headlights” but I still prefer unpadded bras and I’m thrilled they seem to be in stores again. I find them so much more comfortable and especially in winter I don’t worry too much about nipping out, since I’m usually in a bra, cami, dress shirt, and then a sweater, jacket, or cardi. Plus, I don’t necessary like the “perfect” round breast shape that preformed bras give us all. I like to see some uniqueness/naturalness to our forms.

  5. Erin says:

The Laundress Wool and Cashmere Shampoo is only $19 if you order from their website or the Container Store.

  6. SNP says:

Any murder mystery recommendations? Looking for some page turners for upcoming flights!

    • I love old ones like the Rex Stout books and obviously Agatha Christie’s Poirot. For a more modern take the Bernie Rhodenbhar (sp?) books are fab. He’s like a modern day Raffles who is always getting into scrapes when he finds dead bodies.

    • Belle says:

I like Devil in the White City. Not exactly a mystery, but an excellent read.

  7. M says:

Out of curiosity, what color are your eyes, Belle? Mine are brown, and I’ve always heard that purple eye makeup is supposed to be flattering, which that Bobbi Brown color seems to be.

    • Belle says:

I think purple eye makeup is flattering on lots of eye colors. But because you asked, mine are hazel.

    • Anna says:

I think those of us with brown eyes are told purple is unflattering, because the skin around our eyes is more likely to have a slight purple tint and purple eye make-up brings it out. If that’s not the case with your eyes or you find the right shade, purple can look good. I tend to find deep browns with a slight purple hue, like that Black Mauve, pretty flattering, though I would never wear something like the violet one.

  8. Amanda says:

I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed Zimbabwe being on the list as borderline absurd. My favorite line is, “the government is finally stable, the overinflated Zimbabwean dollar is gone..”. Last time I checked with a long time friend who has lived there 25+ years that statement is false. THE NYT made it sound like going there was like going to South Africa which it most definitely is not. And don’t even get me started on lining Mugabe’s pockets with tourist dollars.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
