Hi Belle,
I’m so glad that I found your blog. I am having a dilemma I am hoping you can help with. I have worn jcrew’s vneck sweaters for the last few years but their quality this year is unacceptable; the sweaters are totally see through. Could you please suggest some alternatives? I’m having trouble because I need a slim fit and longer length. So far, I’ve found only boxy fits at stores like Banana Republic.
Thanks!! Ashley
I actually had good luck with this v-neck sweater from Banana Republic. But if you tried that one, let’s see what we can find in a similar price point.
C by Bloomingdale’s Cashmere V-Neck ($99)
This sweater from Bloomingdale’s comes in a wide selection of colors. They also make a crewneck version. If you prefer a wider band around the neckline (it may bel the sweater lay flat), AQUA offers a cashmere sweater for $99 that also comes in decent number of colors.
Brooks Brothers is usually a reliable choice. They make products for a conservative clientele, so the weights are usually right. Their basic v-neck might be a good place to start. Same goes for Land’s End (their sweaters also come in petite and plus).
For a more casual option, I really like this Michael Kors Shaker Stitch option. The longer length in the rear balances out the look of a sweater and skinny jeans.
I’ve always really liked the quality and fit of Express’s v-neck sweaters. At 5’11”, they have plenty of length in the torso and arms for me.

I like Nordstrom’s Halogen cashmere v-neck, though I think they run large so I buy the petite sizing.
Love Halogen’s https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halogen-cashmere-v-neck-sweater-regular-petite/3712310?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_ite=halogen(r)_cashmere_v-neck_sweater_(regular_&cm_pla=women:tops:sweater&cm_ven=Google_Product_Ads_pla_online&mr:referralID=317ee81f-7982-11e4-8d82-001b2166becc
and they are on sale
I buy J. Crew men’s wool sweaters. I’m tall so I like the extra length, but honestly, they are better quality and often cheaper.
That’s an interesting idea. What do you use for a size conversion? Do you find it boxy?
I’ve bought Men’s merino wool sweaters – I liked the color options better. It’s a little boxy, but I didn’t get the slim fit. Also, the Merino has a nice drape to it, which I find cuts down on the boxiness.
I usually wear a women’s L, and went with a men’s M.M
I’m a huge fan of the Uniqlo women’s extra fine merino v-neck. It’s soft but warm, and I have it in light grey which doesn’t require a tank underneath. It also layers well and is not a boxy fit, and I have a long torso but find it suits.
