Ask Belle Roundup: Quick Fashion Answers

Hi Belle-

I’m a big fan of rose gold watches but most of my jewelry (and wedding band) are silver toned.  What are your thoughts on wearing mixed metals (i.e. rose watch, silver rings/earrings/necklace)?

Love the blog!  -Gina

Mixing metals is tricky, but it is possible.  The first thing you can two is select the same piece and wear it in multiple tones.  This Stella & Dot Renegade bracelet comes in all three metals.

The second way to mix metals is to find one unifying piece that combines multiple metals.  This piece, usually a mix of silver and gold, will pull the other pieces together.  It needs to be something substantial to do the job well.  This Spring Street coil bracelet would do the job nicely.  This C. Wonder metal chain link necklace is a lovely choice.  Or if you prefer something subtle, this mixed rivet ring is a chic option.

Hi Belle,

Would you ever wear chocolate brown tights with tortoise pumps?

Thanks, Jen

It depends on the color of the pump.  If it’s a darker tortoise, I don’t see why not.  Just make sure that the tortoise doesn’t have a too much red or yellow in it, that would throw off the look.

Hi Belle,

Can you recommend a gold post earring?  I’m looking for something really small that costs under-$40.  Smaller the better.

Thanks. Cici

These mini-studs from Gorjana should fit the bill.  Their Mika studs are also pretty small.  I also like this Ralph Lauren small pave stud.  And I really like these BaubleBar pyramid studs.

Dear Belle,

Winter weather is really hard on my skin, do you know of a good moisturizing foundation?

Love the blog! Emma

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer is the best one that I’ve used.  You could also try a moisturizing primer, like Smashbox Photoready Hydrating Primer.  However, if you don’t want to spend money on something new, just mix equal parts of your foundation and your moisturizer.

Is mixing metals tricky? Is it weird to wear a rose-gold watch with a platinum wedding set? I combine the pieces I love, metal colors be damned, and if someone else doesn’t like it that’s their problem. I think the “your metals must match” rule is pretty outdated, especially given the trend of layered delicate jewelry in a range of tones.

    • R says:

Agreed. Once I got married, I’m always wearing my platinum wedding band and engagement ring with whatever other jewelry I’m wearing – more often than not gold. I see plenty of other women do the same, seeing as I know very few women with yellow gold wedding set.

    • Belle says:

I think the rule is outdated as well. Wearing them with a unifying piece is kind of an interim step for people who were raised on the rule.

    • D says:

This. I’m not sure if I’m trendy or just don’t give a -, but mixing metals is not the thing I’m worrying about when I think about my own personal style & colors.

To add to the list of possible gold post earrings – I was just given these for my birthday: https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/JEWELRY/earrings/PRDOVR~77281/77281.jsp?color_name=light-worn-gold. They are super small but I love them. I’ve also had my eye on these: https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/JEWELRY/earrings/PRDOVR~67413/67413.jsp

  3. Kim says:

I actually don’t think mixing metals is difficult at all. I just do it. My wedding band is yellow gold and my engagement ring is white gold and I wear them both together all the time. I have watches in rose gold, yellow gold, and white gold and I have no problem wearing any of them with my rings (either both of my rings or sometimes I break them up and wear them separately). Metals are neutrals – just go for it.

    • Kim says:

Also, my parents got me a rolex for a graduation gift that is platinum and yellow gold. I wear it with everything. It is a totally classic, timeless piece (got it in 2005) even with the mixed metals. Not an issue.

    • D says:

Like those body-confident pinterest posts from the summer – do you want a bikini body? Get a bikini. Put it on your body.

How to mix metals? Wear 2 different kinds of metal.

      • Belle says:

I love Nora Ephron’s comment about bikinis: The things you hate about your body at 30, you will be nostalgic for at 50. So if you’re under 40, put on a bikini and never take it off.

  4. CAM says:

For tinted moisturizer, try Tarte–works well for my sensitive, combination/winter dry skin.

  5. espie says:

I too mix metals, I Once I got married, I’m always wearing my wedding band and engagement ring with whatever other jewelry I’m wearing.
