Ask Belle: Stylish Gloves

Nov 13, 2014

Dear Belle,

I always forget to buy gloves until it’s so cold that I rush to CVS and buy some cheap pair of acrylic knit mittens that I throw away come spring.  Not this year.  Can you suggest a pair of stylish gloves that cost under-$50?

Laurel

Just watch Lauren Bacall or Grace Kelly remove her gloves in a classic film, and it’s enough to make you long for the glamour of sating gloves.  Luckily, once the weather turns chilly, we can all channel our inner leading lady with a pair of chic gloves.  Here are a few of my favorites in leather and knit.

Cashmere Blend Baby Cable Gloves ($19)

If you’re going to wear knit gloves, I recommend picking up an inexpensive pair of cashmere-blend or wool gloves.  Their warm, stylish, and luxurious.  I also like these Portolano cashmere gloves with a light ruffle and touch-point for smartphone use.  I also love the chunky texture on these charcoal-grey gloves.  Need black?  LOFT has a pair of simple tech gloves that are worth a look.

Grandoe Cire Comfort Gloves ($39)

Leather gloves can be very expensive, but stylish alternatives exist in the lower price points.  These gloves from Sierra Trading Post are incredible.  They’re insulated, and come in three gorgeous colors.

I also found these Vince Camuto gloves in a color-block of black and tan.  Need touch-screen compatability?  These Echo gloves mix leather and wool.  And if you’re looking for something under-$25, try these gloves from H&M.

Has anyone had luck finding gloves that work for ladies with really long fingers? The size guide for gloves in this post is for hand width, not finger length, so I’m never sure what to expect. Any brands to look for?

    • I have long fingers too, and I ended up going with a pair of XL gloves from Macy’s last year. They were leather, cashmere lined ones from their Charter Club brand. They fit snug in the hand and have nice long fingers.

I can recommend the H&M gloves. They’ve had them in their line for several years and I own both, the black and cognac ones. The beauty of H&M accessories is that they actually sell different sizes – just not in every country, and I haven’t been able to check out the online store in the US.

I would really like to purchase the H&M gloves in black but I do not see a size guide anywhere on their website. Can someone point me in the right direction?

My friend had a pair of either fleece or fleece-looking wool gloves last year that I absolutely coveted! They were very structured like fitted leather gloves so they looked good with formal/professional coats, but because they were a fleece looking material, wouldn’t look too out of place with a puffer jacket either. I’m on the hunt for something similar, but thus far no luck 🙁

  3. Parker says:

You can try Nordstrom Rack, too. They often have nice leather gloves for 39 dollars.

I second the Nordstrom Rack suggestion!!

I also found this website: http://www.leatherglovesonline.com. You can customize the fit of the gloves and the lining. They also have every color under the sun, if you are tired of black and camel.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
