Ask Belle: Getting Flushed

Nov 13, 2014

Hi Belle,

I know you like Bobbi Brown blushes, but is that all you use?  I need something under-$10, and I’m hoping you have a drugstore bargain in your makeup bag. (oh, please, oh, please…)

Sera

Tis true, I do love a Bobbi Brown blush (and her blush brush).  But if you need something less expensive, I have several drugstore blushes that I’ve tried and can recommend.  Because while my every day colors come from Bobbi, sometimes a girl needs to change it up.

e.l.f. Pink Passion Blush ($3)

This is my gym-bag blush.  It’s sheer enough to add a little color or a lot depending on what I want.  I add just a bit to the apples of my cheeks for a pop of color.

I own this Maybelline Fit Me! blush in light mauve.  It has an ethereal glow to it that also makes it a good cheekbone highlighter.  This Maybelline Dream Bouncy cream blush is a great summertime blush.  (Need a cream blush tutorial?  Try this one.)  And if you’re looking for a blush that you can’t screw up, try this Magic Mosaic blush from Physician’s Formula.  It makes blush application and color selection foolproof.

Looks like a beautiful blush. Can you recommend an inexpensive blush brush as well? I have an old e.l.f. one that has seen better days, but I’m not ready to splurge on the Bobbi Brown blush.

    • Belle says:

Sonia Kashuk makes a decent brush. Also, look for an online brand called Sigma. The rumor is that it’s the same people who make the MAC brushes.

      • Jenn S. says:

Seconding these two recommendations. Sigma brushes are excellent. Also, if you need a whole slew of brushes, check out Coastal Scents’ Elite Set – they usually have 30-50% off sales every month or so, making it possible to get for like $35 (for 22 pretty dang good brushes).

  2. anon says:

I love LOVE my wet n wild “pearlescent pink” blush. I also adore my Real Techniques blush brush.

  3. lynn says:

I also really like NYX blushes, not as many options but long lasting and good quality.

  4. Paige says:

Would also like to recommend the Sonia Kashuk cream blush in “Petal” – it’s great.

  5. Jessica says:

Milani blush in “Luminoso” is the perfect peachy/pink shade. I love it and use it all the time. I think it goes great on skin with yellow undertones, but I think this blush works for everyone really.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
