Ask Belle: Healing Chapped Lips

Nov 10, 2014

Dear Belle,

Do you have a lip balm that you use to stave off chapped lips?  Mine are starting to look parched and cracked.

Love the blog! Evie

I just turned my central heating on, and my lips are also suffering.  Luckily, I know just the thing to bring them back to life.

Original Nipple Balm for Lips ($15)

My favorite lip treatment is Blistex Medex, but I’m trying to get away from beauty products that contain petrolatum.  This Nipple Balm for Lips gives the same softening, healing, and smoothing effects in an all-natural formula.  You can also use it on your cuticles to prevent splitting.

Another great option is Rosebud Salve.  Traditionally, it comes in a tin.  But if your finicky about germs, you’re better off with the tube.

Like the rest of your skin, lips require exfoliation.  I like to use Bliss Fabulips.  It conditions, exfoliates, and if you’re wearing creme lipstick, helps your lips hold the color longer.  You can also make your own lip scrub with brown sugar, honey, and coconut oil.

This lip balm is great for wearing to bed. It is still on my lips when I wake up in the morning:

    Nuxe Reve de Miel

$19 for a lip balm? I know. But my lips have never been so NOT chapped…and my lips are always, always chapped. I notice a huge difference the next day if I don’t put it on before bed.

  3. Megan says:

I love the e.l.f lip defoliator…it’s $1, and comes in lipstick like packaging so it’s transportable and not at all messy.

  4. Jenna says:

When I was much younger the rubber bands on my braces made my lips so cracked the would bleed! (So of course I never wore them, and continued wearing braces until I was far too old!) Someone recommended Aquaphore and I have used it everyday since then. It is seriously the only beauty product that I have over a decade of allegiance to!

  5. Kara says:

I use Weleda’s Everon lip balm with rose wax, jojoba and shea butter. Works wonders for the winter. I’ve even attempted switching, but it’s hands down the best lip balm. Sometimes it’s the only thing I wear, and it gives my lips a nice texture. It runs about $6 and you can find it in organic/natural foods stores.

  6. Quinn says:

I use EOS lip balms, as I also prefer Petrolatum-free products. Does wonders for my lips and not expensive.

  7. MCF says:

Huge HUGE fan of the Rosebud Salve.

  8. ant says:

Looks like this nipple balm for lips is 100% lanolin – you can buy tubes of it in the drugstore for <<$15 – either at the pharmacy or in the baby section. It makes a huge difference on noses in the winter when you have a cold too.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
