Ask Belle: Tunic Sweaters for Winter

Oct 28, 2014

Hi Belle,

I wear skinny jeans or thick leggings all winter and I need tops that provide coverage.  Can you help me find some tunic length sweaters?  I need to spend less than $100 per sweater.  Also, no bright colors or pastels if you please.

Thanks, Eun

Longer sweaters are a good casual option, though you can also wear sleeker ones with pencil skirts.  I found some lovely choices in your price point, so let’s dive right in.

Caslon Cowl Neck Tunic ($68) // Vince Drop Shoulder Sweater ($90) // Heather B Marled Sweater ($88)

The first two tunics come in fall hues neither bright, nor pastel.  If cowl neck tops aren’t your thing, this Topshop sweater is cozy-looking.  This scoop neck sweater from Ann Taylor (also in petite) comes in three seasonal colors, and this Vince Camuto tunic comes in a lovely shade of cranberry.

Prefer neutrals?  I love the black-and-white marled tunic from Bloomingdale’s.  Banana Republic also has this merino tunic in black and charcoal, and I adore their chunky cable tunic (also in petite).  This BCBGeneration boucle sweater is an interesting option.  And don’t miss black-and-cream color block sweater from Last Call.

Plus-size? This cable Alfani sweater comes in several gorgeous colors, and this shirt tail hem Halogen sweater is a nice option.

One last bit of advice, before you buy a tunic sweater always check the rear view.  If they cut across your backside in the wrong place, they actually make your rear look wider.  And who wants that?  Nobody, that’s who.

I have some tunics/tunic sweaters that I want to wear with pencil skirts, but I’m not sure how. Can you post some examples? I’m mostly worried about proportions.

I just went to Ann Taylor this afternoon and with their 60% additional off sale items, I bought two tunic sweaters for about $35 each. I love a good buy.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
