Ask Belle: Are Smoking Slippers Chic?

Hi Belle

What are your thoughts on smoking slippers/loafers?  I’ve been thinking a gray suede or calf hair pair would be a good casual shoe for this season but I’ve had a hard time finding a basic pair without tassels, studs, cat faces (what Nordstrom?), etc.  Hope all is well in law school!

Thanks! D

I think smoking slippers are a nice casual option.  They don’t look good on everyone (my feet are a bit too long and narrow for them), but if you like the look, they’re a nice replacement for ballet flats.

Why anyone would pay $500 for shoes with ears is a mystery to me, but let’s see if we can’t find something better…

I think a calf-hair or animal-print flat is a good casual option.  These Vittadini flats also come in a grey and black combo.  These Dolce Vita flats have a cool, feather-like print.

For something really basic, these black leather Nine West slippers are a good place to start.  This calf-hair pair from DSW offer a simple shape in a unique material.  Or if you’re looking for grey suede, Charlotte Russe has a pair for under-$25.

For something different, these embellished black-on-black smoking slippers from VANELi are a chic option.  I like the modern take on sparkle.  I also like these burnished gold slippers from Club Monaco.

Anyone able to wear these with anything but slim ankle pants? I have a leopard pair from Zara last year that I have been wearing with black slim pants for a week straight due to a foot injury. I’d love ideas to mix it up.

I have a pair of leopard print calf hair loafers that I purchased at the end of last season (seriously discounted) from Madewell. They are in heavy rotation in my closet. I have a lot of wool ankle pants in my wardrobe in different colors (black, grey, navy, pink), so I wear them with those and jeans. I also think they’d be cute with a knife pleated skirt and dressier top, too.

They probably run narrow as they fit my narrow feet well, and be sure to size up if you’re between sizes.

I have to admit I like the Charlotte Olympia cat flats (not the heels). They aren’t part of my budget, but I think they are cute in a whimsical way. I bought these a few years ago and they make for cute travel pictures/and kind of just make me smile on my commute:

I’m such a sucker for metallic smoking slippers – those Club Monaco slippers are a tease since they’re sold out in my size! 🙁 Definitely need to keep an eye out!
