Zella Live In Leggings ($33)

For me, the best thing in this sale are the Zella Live-In Leggings.  I bought three pair.  I wear them around the house every night and every weekend.  They’re thick, age well with repeated wear and wash, and the wide waistband makes them super comfortable.  Now, onto some of my other favorites.

Work Dresses.  Who couldn’t use a great basic dress at a great price?  This chic Vince sheath comes in a medium-charcoal and a mulberry color.  This Classiques Entier dress with short sleeves comes in three great colors.  Want a splurge choice?  Burberry forever.

Need something under-$100?  You’re in luck.  This Taylor pintuck dress has a really sleek, modern look.  Don’t miss this simple Cali sheath from T Tahari with a slimming colorblock style.  And this Marc New York cap-sleeve dress is one you can wear for years to come.

Plus-size?  This simple Eliza J shift is a classic.  Petite? This cobalt sheath (also in misses) is incredible.

Shoes. The sale has a great selection of simple work pumps, pumps for days.  These basic Cole Haan pumps are worth a shot.  The Halogen Marlie pump is a great under-$75 basic.  I also love them in the grey leopard color.

Need fall boots?  These Via Spiga Cecil boots and these Cole Haan Carlyle boots are a bit pricey, but worth it.  For and under-$150 option, these casual Sam Edelman boots are a fantastic option.

Halogen Seamed Pencil Skirt ($46, also in petite)

Aside from the leggings, this skirt is the buy of the sale.  It is a fan.tas.tic basic.  It comes in all of my favorite fall colors–black, camel, berry, teal–and a cool navy and black colorblock option.  It’s like Nordstrom’s design people gave me a present.

Work Shop. If you don’t know where to start with the sale, hit the work shop.  Some great blazers, tops and pants.  They also have some inexpensive suiting options like this Halogen option.  But my favorite piece is this Halogen Mixed Media tweed jacket, perfect with black separates or with jeans.

Casual Clothing.  Need jeans?  My favorite pair of Paige Skyline jeans are in the sale.  I also like this Drape Neck sweatshirt from Caslon for a fun way to wear jersey.  I also like the star-print on this Halogen blouse for something a bit different under my casual jackets and cardis.

I really cannot get on board with the Zella leggings. I’ve tried three pairs now in different sizes and have found them to be of questionable and not all that comfortable, thre material is scratchy and the seams don’t lay flat. All three pairs, no matter the size, were sheer as well. I guess they were not designed for an athletic water polo player/runner lower body. I really do not recommend them at all.

    • Cmh says:

Ahh typing on my phone. *to be of questionable quality. And *the

    • Liz says:

I love mine! (two pairs of black, always good to have a back up pair when it’s an item you drip dry)

I have had the opposite experience, well except for “scratchy” at first. I wasn’t in love with the feel of the fabric when I first purchased them, but after I washed them it was much much nicer. I never had any problems with seams or a lack of opacity (I don’t have a lithe lower body either – lots of spin classes). I have only purchased in black though, so I could not comment as to them being sheer in a color though.

      • Cmh says:

I am extremely muscular in my lower body but also very petite (5’1). The type of athletic figure I am speaking of is not one built from spinning, rather deadlifting, weight lifting, and heavily concentrated training so perhaps your idea of an extremely athletic lower body and mine differ. I owned two black and one grey pairs. All of which were sheer when involved in any movement other than walking. Just something to consider for similarly figured women.

        • Liz says:

Cmh – I do a bit of lifting myself, but it seems to pale in comparison the scale that you do. Most of my close girlfriends have more a dancer like lower halves, so I compare myself to them when I say that I don’t have “thin” legs. Though I am sure we are all “extremely athletic” in our own sports/workouts. Bummer that these leggings don’t work for you though. Hope you have another brand that you really like!

          • Cmh says:

Yes your spinning and bit of lifting make you extremely athletic.

          • Liz says:

Your response seems snarky to me, and I hope that you didn’t interpret anything in my previous comments to you as rude to you; I am truly sorry if I was. I compete in several century cycling events each year to raise money for charity and only use lifting as once a week cross training, so I do feel like I am pretty athletic, though I didn’t think I would usually have to explain it in detail to feel accepted at my word. I’m impressed by your deadlifting (that has always intimidated me).

          • Ten says:

Yes I don’t understand the snarky comment in response to Liz either. I think the leggings are great but obviously not everything works for everyone. Can we not attacking someone’?

    • Anna says:

Hmmmm, did you try the plain “Live-In” leggings or a different style? That’s the kind I have and I love them, but I haven’t tried any of their other styles. I’m definitely not tiny on the bottom either – latin hips/butt, plus running and lots-o squats in my life. I actually liked the texture more at first. They were super thick. My boyfriend called them my scuba pants. Now, they’re normal – still thick and nowhere near see-through. Are you sure you’re in the right size? I also love the waist-band and that it goes up to my belly button, so it sucks everything in.

  2. MLKSAH says:

I picked up this Animal Print Sheath Dress. It doesn’t look special online or on the hanger. But it looks awesome one you’re wearing it. Super flattering.

    • cbackson says:

Hm, I didn’t love it on – liked it, but didn’t love it. I’m not sure why. Sadly, I’m returning everything I bought from the sale except a pair of brown Aerin D’orsay heels and one of the Pleione split-neck tops – that dress was the last thing that I was on the fence about, but my new “only buy things I really love” policy meant it had to go back as well.

  3. Ashley says:

I cannot say enough good things about the Halogen pencil skirts! They wear great and they last forever.

  4. Nora says:

Does anyone have experience with the in-house Trouvé brand? I’m drooling over this jacket: https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/trouve-leather-moto-jacket/3676624

  5. Pam says:

I got both a live in legging and the balance pant. Love them both, they are not sheer. I am 5’10” and 160lbs – so not tiny. So I got XL. Super comfy

  6. Marisa says:

Picked up 2 pairs of the leggings, the Halogen pencil skirt, and a purple blazer. Thanks for the recommendations! I may have to order more pencil skirts . . .

  7. Melanie says:

My Zella Live In leggings survived almost 2.5 years in Morocco! (I was in the Peace Corps) Unlike most of the clothes that I brought (and later trashed or gave away) my leggings really held up and still look nice. I wore them all the time under skirts, by themselves, and sometimes under my jeans when it was freezing! I definitely recommend them.

  8. rar says:

LOVE zella leggings! I was disenchanted with lulu after some pretty serious quality issues (pilling, sheerness, general annoyance with the brand, the usual), and in my experience, zella addresses all of those concerns. I am VERY sweaty when working out and the wicking and breathability qualities of zella have been great. Added bonus: when I go to Nordstrom I’m not bombarded by 17 girls asking me “so where do you sweat?!”

For reference, I use my zella for yoga, running and lounge.

  9. Faith says:

I have one ponte dress and declined anything ponte that my personal shopper picked out for me. While I don’t dislike the dress I already own, am I the only one who is not in the pro-ponte camp?

    • Anna says:

What don’t you like about it? I have one dress that I LOVE and am looking to add more ponte to my wardrobe. I mainly love that’s it’s structured yet still stretchy and comfortable.

  10. Kathleen says:

Belle – I typed in my full name out of habit. Can you please remove my last name?

  11. euny says:

OMG, This is my first time leaving a comment, but you ladies scared me there for a second. I ordered the Zella legging before I read this post and I’ve been wondering about the fit. This sounded like a perfect fit when I ordered them…I’m tall 5’11 and my calves are very muscular( thicker than my thigh right above knee) and my “hind” can use a bit of cushion, I ordered medium, just received both of them today, I love them. The thickness is what I wanted for chilly fall/winter day and length is good, waist band can be a bit tighter since I like the help of elastic band so it pushes back whatever is trying to hang out… all in all, I’m glad I didn’t pay the full price and satisfied. This will be my new outfit for air travel.

  12. Sara says:

I bought the Halogen skirt in Teal on your recommendation — it’s fantastic! I love it! And a very nice fit and fabric texture.

  13. JNick says:

Between your many odes of praise and my lady friends’ rave reviews, I finally caved and grabbed a pair of the Zella leggings during the Anniversary Sale. I’m 5’10 and athletic (and for those who are territorial over that term, all I mean is that I do Pilates 3-4x a week, play soccer once a week, and run the occasional marathon. Sorry, no dead lifting.) and the mediums fit great–look that they’re sturdy and comfy at the same time. Thanks for the good steer

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
