BPGP: Emjoi Divine Hair Remover

Jul 15, 2014

AP-17SEWhen I moved out of D.C., I lost some things.  My favorite restaurant.  My hairdresser.  The tailor I trusted to care for my clothing.  And most importantly, my favorite hair-removal technician at Bliss Spa, Charly.

As most women know, the bond between a woman and her waxer is sacred.  Choosing someone to help with your intimate grooming needs requires research, references and most importantly, hard wax, which is far superior to liquid wax.  I have called every salon in my new city, and no one uses hard wax.  So until I find a salon willing to let me bring my own wax (BYOW, oh yes, I’m going there), I need to find away to tame my bikini line so I can lounge by the pool without scaring the little children.  And any potential suitors.

Enter the Emjoi Divine ($60).  It looks like a razor, but it’s actually a device that pulls the hair from the root like a wax.  Imagine 20 tiny tweezers all working at once. And it is a lifesaver.

Does it work? this thing really works.  You use short, quick strokes to remove the hair (not the long strokes you use to shave).  And while it is a bit time-consuming (my bikini area took 20-30 minutes), the results were as smooth and hair free as they would have been post wax.  A few ingrown hairs after, but no more than if I had gone for a wax.  A little Tend Skin and they were gone in a couple of days.

How long does it last? The box claims the result last six weeks, just like a wax.  Two weeks in, I can tell you that estimation seems accurate.  To get the hair back to the length where it can be removed easily, you’re probably looking at eight, depending on how fast your hair grows.

How long does the hair have to be?  The box says it works on 1/4-inch or longer hair.  I found that, at least with finer leg and arm hair, 1/4-inch was not sufficient.  My current plan is to continue to shave my calves and knees with a traditional razor (cause I don’t want to put the 10 days into growing the hair long enough to be pulled), and use the Emjoi on my arms, thighs and bikini area.

How painful is it?  I would not say that the experience was pain-free.  I also would not say that it was painful.  On a scale of 1 to ten, I would argue that it was about a four.  If you’re at all concerned about the pain, just take an Advil, and you probably won’t feel a thing.

Any tips?  You must exfoliate before hand.  I used the divide fresh from the heat of the shower, and I think that really helped.  I also cannot stress enough how important it is to keep the skin taut.  It speeds the process and makes it less painful with a lower chance of ingrowns.  As for after care, treat your skin just like you would post wax.

This model comes with a shaver and a callus remover attachment at well.  If you think you need more than the 36 tweezer attachments in the Divine model, you Emjoi has a device with 72 tweezer heads.

I think this device would be perfect for someone who travels a lot.  It would be great for someone whose planning an extended beach vacation and wants the ability to do some cleanup work.  Or if you just want to cheaply and effectively remove excess hair from your arms, stomach, legs, etc.  And ladies, if your man is looking to keep his body hair in check, they make a model for me as well.

This might be worth it in the winter when the leg fuzz is hidden under pants, tights, and leggings. I hate shaving when it’s cold – goosebumps+dry skin=nasty ingrowns and itchies.

On the wax front, have you tried sugaring (assuming that’s available)? I prefer it over hard wax (the anticipation of waiting for the wax to dry makes it seem more painful). It also doesn’t stick to your skin or get as hot and if it’s honey-based, it has antibacterial properties which is a nice plus in such an…ummm…delicate area.

  2. Mo says:

Melting Pot microwave hard wax (preferably after a half-bottle of wine) got me through law school.

  3. s says:

oh, yeah…i have an epilady that i use for under my arms. i think it works pretty much the same way as this contraption (seriously, why don’t more people use these?!?). also sally hansen microwaveable wax. i hate shaving with a razor…so uncomfortable growing out and you have to do it every day. that was all probably TMI, but oh well.

  4. Alexie says:

I ended up going to Bliss per your recommendation, and eventually got Charly. She is the best! I will never go anywhere else as long as I’m living in DC 🙂 Thanks for the info on Emjoi- might look into getting one.

  5. Sarah says:

Be careful with cosmetics on Amazon. A lot of reviews claiming that the TendSkin in the link is counterfeit. I’ve noticed much-too-cheap Dermalogica on there as well, and, while tempting, too many reviews call the product out as fake. I wish Amazon was a little more careful about this.

  6. MF says:

I LOVE my epilator. I’ve had it for years (inspired by a French host sister who only used them). I use it once a month (or every other month) on my bikini area. I used to get lots of ingrown hairs from shaving, but rarely get them from epilating. I tried to use it on my legs once, but it took a million years and I didn’t think it was worth it. Mine also has a shaving attachment, which is nice when I want to “landscape”.

  7. Alex says:

I have a Braun Silk Epil epilator with 40-something tweezer heads that I have used (and loved) for the past five years, but I think I might give this Emjoie 72 tweezer epilator a try!

  8. Lexi says:

Agree on the sacred bond– I’ve been going to my waxer since 1997 and say it’s my longest intimate relationship, lol! She’s mentored some other aestheticians, but while they’re good, they’re not as fast or painless as she is.

  9. Ann says:

Oh girl, WHY on earth are you not lasered yet??? In this day and age? I had my bikini line lasered about 15 years ago and it is AWESOME. Back then, it was still a bit painful. But nowadays, you can barely even feel the laser – it’s a breeze. I’m currently having my legs and armpits done too – it’s heaven. You can get INCREDIBLE deals on lasering on Groupon and Living Social. You’ll never have to wax again!

    • Anna says:

I’ve always been worried that if you go in with those deals, they’re use a lower power laser or something so you end having to buy more sessions. Am I off-base? They are really tempting.

      • Liz says:

I used a Groupon to go to the same place as my sister went. We both were hair free in the same number of sessions, so I don’t think places do that. (At least not where I live)

One other note though – if you are planning to have children in the near future, you may want to wait on laser, pregnancy hormones can cause the hair to come back (happened to my coworker).

    • AM says:

Ann- do you live in DC? Where have you had your lasering done? I’m interested to try it, but I’d rather go to a place that is highly recommended.

    • Belle says:

I’m not layered because as an olive skinned person, I was told to avoid the laser because it would likely cause melasma and hyper pigmentation.

  10. Christine says:

How do epilators work for fellow ladies with thicker body hair? How does the pain compare to (facial) threading?

    • Liz says:

I’ve never used an epilator on my bikini area, but I use one on my legs every couple weeks and I’ve had Brazilians – honestly, it’s just like the wax. I find the epilator has an easier time with thick hair than it does with fine, since those often slip between the tweezers. Expect usual regrowth – I seriously lol’d at the six week regrowth period above (I’m envious!) because for me a Brazilian lasts maybe three/four. Legs are about three weeks with the epilator…just depends on where you are regrowth-wise.

      • Anna says:

For real. By week 2, I have to wear bikini bottoms with mroe coverage. I’d be intrigued to try it on my underarms (though that’s SUPER painful to wax for me…like way more than Brazilians). I’m super pale with dark hair, so even when I’m fresh shaven, it looks like I have stubble on my underarms.

        • Liz says:

Yep! Same here. The epilator (and waxing) make a huge difference for me for exactly that reason – dark hair + pale skin = looks like stubble even when you’ve shaved…I used it on my underarms for the first time last week. So far so good. I’m a little concerned about ingrowns.

          • Belle says:

Those cheap exfoliating gloves are a lifesaver. If you start exfoliating now, you’re far less likely to get ingrowns when it grows back in.

          • Christine says:

Thanks ladies! I am right there with you with the pale skin + dark, thick body hair (and super sensitive skin). Based on your feedback, I’ll look into buying an epilator and see how it goes!

  11. FT says:

    Hey Belle,

If you were a fan of the waxing services at the Bliss Spa, why don’t you try their microwavable wax kit (sold at Sephora). As a hairy South Asian woman this product is my savior, and has saved me tons of money also. I start by waxing my legs, but have recently learned how to wax my own underarms.

    • Belle says:

I’ve tried waxing myself before, and I am too squeamish (?) to get a good, strong pull. I may buy the wax and have a professional use it. I just don’t have the technique, and I’ve tried to work past that with no luck.

  12. Julia S. says:

Ok, I’m really embarrassed to ask, but isn’t it weird to get waxed around your bikini area? Legs I could see – armpits ok, but the thought of stripping down to have some stranger was *there* – shudder. How do you do it?

I’ve tried the wax strips and they hurt way too much. I may try this, because I really hate shaving and it always looks messy. I’ve even Nair’ed but it was really foul and I didn’t get a good line.

  13. Anne says:

Have you called Spa Paradiso? I seem to remember they had hard wax as an option (I should note that I haven’t lived there for a while so things might have changed).

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
