Belle’s Weekly Reading: June 27

On Wednesday, I mentioned that I was considering posting the Weekly Reading more frequently.  After thinking about it and talking to some friends who are also readers, I decided to post a Weekly Work Reading on Wednesdays and then the regular post on Fridays.  I think that doing it this way will keep the content varied and unique, even though the format will be the same.

***

1) If the dozens of tweets and e-mails are any indication, some of you are very excited for Limited’s Olivia Pope-inspired collaboration with the costume designer from Scandal.  I expect gorgeous coats and blazers that will sell out within moments, and then be posted to eBay for 10x their MSRP.

2) These grey Chinese Laundry sandals pack a lot of style into $45.

3) The crew at The Daily Show takes on sexual assault on America’s college campuses and some of the ridiculous punishments doled out the men found responsible.  It’s sad, funny and true.

4) I paint my nails at home, and this new Plie Wand from Julep is a game-changer.  The wand improves accuracy and control for the perfect paint job every time.  As for my favorite Julep hue, it’s their newest shade, a rich berry hue called Kessie.

5) EW.com has a list of the 55 Essential Movies That Kids Must Experience Before They Turn 13.  Some great flicks on this list.

6) The Outnet is killing it this week.  This under-$150 cobalt and black knit dress from DvF is a killer.  This two-tone Helmut Lang top would look good in any season.  And while I am completely unsure why, I love this Alexander McQueen necklace.

7) Advertisements say a lot about cultural views on women, both good and bad.  This ad from Verizon illustrates the importance of encouraging girls to be interested in more than just looking pretty.

Conversely, the Amy Poehler for Old Navy ads have reached a new low.  In the latest one, a model stands at a microphone wearings a strapless jersey dress, a rope belt and six-inch high heels.  She’s a politician running for office, and she’s super smart!  You can tell because she’s wearing glasses.

8) Need to dry Nalgene bottles, baby bottles or other hand-wash-only items?  This Grass Countertop Bottle Drying Rack is a lifesaver.

9) Are you saying/using these common phrases wrong?  The humbling quiz that everyone should take.

10)  This $25 H&M Shopper Tote has a chic structured shape. Must-have.

11) Elle has an opinion piece entitled, “In Defense of Your Husband’s Female Friend.”  I’m not crazy about the writer’s thought process on the issue. (Maybe it’s intentionally provocative click-bait?)  But as a woman with close male friends who are married/committed,  I think it’s a topic that needs to be sussed out, just not by her.

12) Have bangs?  Ulta has a tool that will help you trim them to the perfect length at home.  And you’re a curly-haired girl, this was my favorite diffuser back when I was wearing my hair in waves.

13) Can you improve your luck?  Mental Floss has an interesting piece on the psychology behind luck and chance.

14) Coach is having a not-to-be-missed semi-annual sale. This peachy pink hobo bag is a great piece.  The shoe selection is phenomenal, esp. these simple Nala heels in four great colors.  And the wallets and clutches are to.die.for.

And since my parents, who forgot my birthday present for the third year in a row, are reading this, two words: Python-printed Trench.

Weekly reading is one of my favorite things you do on the blog. Very glad you are doing two a week now!

  2. Heather says:

Speaking of nail polish- did anyone else see that O.P.I. is doing a line of house paint now?

  3. Addie says:

The weekly readings and ask Belle round ups are my favorite reoccurring features!

  4. Sandra says:

Anyone know if threat julep wand can be used on other nail polish brands?

  5. MaryMary says:

Belle (and other ladies), do you have any concerns with wearing python to the office? I bought a dress with a python print from Talbots (which has some surprisingly cute dresses and good sales), and my mother gave me the side eye and said “that’s a whole lot of lizard” when she saw me in it. I usually wear a blazer or cardigan so the pattern isn’t overwhelming. I work in a fairly conservative office – I don’t have to wear a suit, but the only time my male coworkers don’t wear a tie is if they’re golfing that day. Thoughts?

  6. Ann says:

What I took away from that article about men and female friends is that the author takes a “I knew him first so calm down” attitude and completely doesn’t understand the boundaries involved with marriage or any other cultural, religious considerations. I agree with you that this is something that needs to be discussed but that article fails miserably.

    • Kristen says:

I’m with you Ann! Belle was dead on – her writing was god awful. It’s a real shame. Definitely a missed opportunity to open the dialogue on a high profile sight.

      • Belle says:

I completely agree with both of you. It had an “If I wanted him, I would have had him attitude. And you should be grateful to me for taking the pressure off of you,” attitude. Whereas, with my friendships with men, I’m always trying to balance being respectful of their marriage and that bond and being a supportive friend. It’s not always easy to know where that line is, but that doesn’t mean that male/female friendships aren’t possible. I’m lucky that my best friend’s wife is a really secure person and never felt threatened by our friendship.

  7. Belle likes rape says:

Sexual assault is now funny? Maybe you need a first person dose to see just how “funny” it is.

You are a very sick, horrible person.

    • Belle says:

No, I think the sick person is the one saying that another needs to be or should be sexual assaulted. Your IP address has been logged. You have commented on this blog before under the name Ashley and then anon. The software also logged your IP addresses location via latitude and longitude. I hope this was just a knee jerk reaction to something you didn’t like, but regardless, it’s not acceptable and won’t be tolerated. Don’t think because you use a different (vulgar) email address to comment, you are anonymous.

What was funny was how clearly the female comedian illustrated how dangerous this world is for women, and how men seem to be mostly oblivious to it. Comedy is a valuable tool to transmit messages that people might otherwise be unwilling to hear. Hopefully, The Daily Show’s male viewers will think of this issue in a new way.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
