Ask Belle: Jersey Casual Dresses

May 29, 2014

Hi Belle,

I’m on the hunt for some jersey dresses.  I want to buy a selection: short sleeve, racer back, maxi and the like for wearing on the weekends.  It’s just too damn hot in Florida to wear anything else.  Because I’m stocking up, I’d like all of them to cost less than $50.

Thank you! Carver

Jersey dresses, now you’re speaking my language.  All casual, all the time.  They’re my favorite.  You can wear them, wash them.  You can dress them up or down.  Here are some fantastic, inexpensive choices:

Merona Women’s Knit Dress ($20) // Dorothy Perkins Maxi Dress ($21) // Gap Racerback Tank Dress ($49)

These three dresses are phenomenal.  The Merona dress is a good weight, it also wears well.  They make several nice dresses in all shapes, colors and sizes.  This black and white stripe maxi caught my eye, as did this sleeveless dress with a colorblock band around the bottom.  And don’t miss this simple tee in heather grey and black.

Merona also carries plus-size dresses like this tie-belt maxi dress and this phenomenal striped, sleeveless dress.  Petites are also covered with this sleeveless ponte dress and many others like it.

Gap also has some good choices, like this racerback tee dress.  For maxis, they have this striped cami dress and this short sleeve t-shirt dress.  For knee-length dresses, they’ve got this twist-waist dress and this slouchy dress with a circle hem.  They also carry many items in tall and petite sizes.

I also find that if you take a run out to Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx or Marshall’s, you can find a lot of discounted and inexpensive jersey dresses for sale.  But I find that online shopping is the best way to find what you’re looking for at the price you want.

I’m all about jersey dresses, but what are the appropriate undergarments to wear underneath without VPL or being to “jiggly”?

    • Chloe says:

Curious on this one too … They’re always a bit too snug and show off all the wrong things! Minus that first one, which would be easy enough with a belt.

  2. I’m wearing this dress right now and it is fantastic!! I actually bought it on sale for $5; a sale that seems to happen quite a bit at h&m.

Jersey dresses are the best! I live in them in the summer. I actually have had good luck thrifting them as well.

I just wanted to chime in that the Merona dress is amazing, I have been living in it ever since I bought it. I know exactly what commenters are saying about jersey dresses leading to VPLs and jigglies. That is not a problem with this dress, as Belle said it is a good weight, unlike some other jersey dresses out there. And a slip is always a good idea if you do have those issues.
