Happy Hour: We Wear Short Shorts

LazyGirlSangria-046

We talk a lot about cocktails that can be made in batches, but what if you just need a glass or two?  This cocktail, Lazy Girl Sangria, can be made one glass at a time.  Created by Dessert for Two, the cocktail has fresh raspberries, orange liquor and red wine.  Because why invent the wheel if you don’t have to?

J.Crew 4″ Short ($45 with 25%-off with code PACKME)

I’ve discussed this before, and even though it is somewhat controversial, I want to talk about it again.  I believe that the 4″ short is the perfect length.  Why?  In the heat and humidity of the summer, when you sit your shorts bunch up in the inseam area.  The shorter the shorts, the more pronounced the bunching.  Sometimes, I see women with shorts so bunched up, they look like canvas bikini bottoms.

A 4″ short bunches up less and is more flattering on the short-legged and the pear-shaped.  I was surprised by the difference 1″ made the first time I put a pair on.  I just think they look better than a 3″ short, even though the difference should be negligible.

If you like shorts, J.Crew has the best ones.  I also think you can find cute pieces at Old Navy in the 3 1/2″ inseam.  Madewell has a wide selection of denim shorts and novelty pieces.  Gap also has lots of shorts at good prices, and in regular, petite and tall sizes.

Plus-size?  Land’s End has a great selection of shorts.

Old Navy’s 3 1/2″ inseam shorts are actually 4″ if you order the tall size.

  2. Morgan says:

Tommy Hilfiger makes a fantastic twill short.

  3. JenniferD says:

I endorse J.Crew shorts! I’m 5’7″ (or 5’8″ some days) and I find the 4″ and 5″ Chino Shorts to be just right. 3″ is a little short (but good for really hot days), and 7″ and 9″ seem a little matronly. So happy summer is here and I can wear my shorts!

  4. Monica says:

The J. Crew Broken-In Boyfriend Chino Short have made me love shorts again, they are a little longer, 5″ when rolled, but oh so comfy and look classic. I wish they’d add some other neutrals, but definitely a big believer in J. Crew shorts now.

  5. Linda L says:

I like LOFT shorts, too. They have a lot of 4″ inseam styles, tons of colors and prints.

    • Anna says:

The only denim shorts that have ever fit me were from Loft, but they stretch out super quickly. My bf says they give me “diaper butt.” Not cute 🙁

  6. Katie says:

Agree with Linda! The loft 4” shorts are amazing and come in so many colors (and are so affordable)

  7. I’ve tried the four inch but they make my legs look shorter I find. Maybe it’s because I’m just shy of 5’3″ but they just look better on me. I do tend to buy a size up though so they sit lower than usual.

  8. Natalie says:

Thank you for addressing this! I have such a hard time finding “long enough” shorts. I do like the Loft ones. Any suggestions on denim shorts of that length? The longer ones I’ve seen seem to have a more narrow leg which is neither comfortable in stifling heat or flattering on my legs.

  9. TT says:

I have the chino shorts from jcrew factory and I love them! They sell the 4″, which is my favorite, and have great colors. I own them in a plum pink, cobalt blue and black.

  10. Linda says:

Another vote for the LOFT shorts – definitely my favorite. They come in lots of colors, and look fantastic. I haven’t had a problem with them stretching.

  11. Thanks for linking to my sangria 🙂

  12. Joules says:

I can’t stand shorts–a skirt always looks more chic, sexy, and polished. Just my 2 cents.

    • Sara says:

Unfortunately a skirt looks a lot less chic when it keeps you on the sidelines for, say, picnics on the grass, or sailboat rides, or puts you at risk for indecent exposure. But then again, shorts often come into play when having fun is more important than looking chic, sexy, and polished (not that I think the two are mutually exclusive).

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
