10th Commandment: May 19

Black T-shirt Dress ($98 + 40%-off with code BRMONDAY)

I love dresses.  I could live my entire life in dresses.  (Though I’m still trying to learn to get in and out of my Jeep in a dress while still looking like a lady.)  So I thought this week, I would post some under-$125 dresses for work and play.

This black dress is sublime.  It’s more for casual days, because it dips down in the back, but depending on your office, you might be able to wear it to work.  I love to wear it with flat sandals and a long necklace.  I also wore it to dinner last week with an embellished belt and high-heeled sandals.

Banana also makes a jersey dress in a fit-and-flare style that looks very versatile.  If the half-sleeve isn’t your favorite length, I like this H&M jersey sheath dress.    I also found this Boden sheath dress with a geometric appliqué on the front.

For a more casual dress, I love this twist front dress from Three Dots.  Velvet makes a simple t-shirt dress that I own in a couple of colors, it’s incredibly comfortable.  If you’d like a maxi dress, try this short sleeve maxi from Splendid.

Plus-size:  This Asos Curve midi-dress is a great piece, as is this Eileen Fisher 3/4 sleeve dress.  It costs a bit more, but it’s a staple piece.  Petite or Tall:  Try this Boden Lana dress for work, or the Banana t-shirt dress above.

I also live in dresses, to the point that people tease me about it. They’re just so perfect, comfy, and flattering!

Since you mentioned owning a Jeep, do you mind sharing a review? Recently, I left DC and relocated to Texas. This move means I need to purchase a vehicle. Jeeps are at the top of the list for many reasons and I would appreciate your review.

I bought a Grand Cherokee and I love it. Smooth ride, good features, very roomy. My one small complaint is the turn signal is sensitive like a 12-yr-old girl. But it’s more of an annoyance than a problem.

  3. Leigh says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has that problem with my Jeep.

    • Belle says:

Every time I get out of it I think, “Yeah, that was ladylike.”

      • KC says:

I’ve had luck swinging my legs around so I’m sitting facing away from the car and then sliding out so both my feet hit the ground at the same time.

  4. Jessica says:

Belle can you comment on the fit of this dress? I was looking at the reviews and few people mentioned it would only look goof on a size OT

    • Belle says:

I will say this, I had to size up for my hips because it has some cling to it, but that’s not unusual for me. The alteration to take the bust in was $18 for me.

  5. Emily says:

I’d love to see a two-ways for this dress!

  6. Sarah says:

Newbie question: I’ve been curious about this for awhile now. To what does “the 10th Commandment” refer?

    • Belle says:

I had a friend in college who used to say that “Thou shalt not covet” should have an addendum that said, “Thou shalt not pay retail.” When I started the blog, she was helping me write it and she named the column. I’ve just never changed the name.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
