Ask Belle: Finding Under-$200 Handbags

Apr 9, 2014

Hi Belle,

I need a new handbag, something that I can wear to work or on the weekends.  I’m looking in the $200 range, so something nicer than my Limited tote but not as expensive as Rebecca Minkoff or Coach.

Thanks for the help!

If you are searching for bags under-$200, I think Nordstrom has a great selection.  To answer your specific question about a professional bag that is relaxed enough to be carried during casual times, I like this Michael Kors Jet-Set Chain Tote (great colors) or this Elliott Lucca satchel (a great mid-price brand.

Looking for something under-$100?  I think Zara has the best selection.  This Mini-City Bag is lovely, as is their City Bag with Zips.  It’s also a great place to buy fashion-forward bags like the bucket tote.

If you have some time, watch amazon and see what comes up. I got a Zac Posen bag for 50% off by waiting patiently. The bag was still selling for $400 at other big retailers.

I’m a huge fab of Neiman’s Last Call (lastcall.com) for handbags. They always have nice leather styles, tons of brands that I like – Foley & Corinna, Pour La Victorie, Minkoff, etc, and they always have really good prices. I just cheked the website today and it’s 35% off any 1 item. With prices already marked down, you can score a really classic and good quality bag for under $200.

Accessorize in Union Station actually has great (and very affordable!) handbags.

The Zara city tote is an awesome budget option.

I just bought a gorgeous green Coach satchel (with tons of pockets!) on eBay for $60 bucks. I shop around until I find a brand & style I want, then open a search and bid. I picked up a lovely red Michael Kors Hamilton bag last year for about $130 the same way. It needed a little repair, something my local Nordie’s was willing to do for a small fee.

  6. I’d think about the Kate Spade outlet as well. Unlike other brands they don’t make straight to outlet items, their stuff is cute and the outlet prices often go on sale.

And if you are a student or still have your student ID, they give a 15% student discount (on top of any sales)!

If you need a laptop bag- Macys.com is running a sale on Samsonite. Looks like half off, then an extra 15% off. If you’re local to a Macys- they will honor the web pricing, so those of us who are challenged at the delayed gratification thing can get them quickly.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
