Sole Society Jenn Pump ($70) // 6. Minkoff Snakeskin Mini-MAC Crossbody ($225) // 7. House of Harlow Carmen Shades ($125) // 8. Bauble Bar Band Ring ($36) and Metal Links Ring ($32) // 9. Minkoff V-Hoop Earrings ($38)

Today’s look comes from Lucky Magazine’s “street style” photo collection.  Their piece on 31 Looks for March is a great primer if you’re struggling with how to dress in the still-chilly spring weather.  This outfit is perfectly layered, simply styled and in a color palette that doesn’t belong to any single season.  Here’s how to recreate it.

I love a collarless coat.  This navy one from Zara would be perfect for chilly spring days.  Not a big fan of the collarless look?  Swap in this Mango trench, or you can get the best of both worlds with this Asos collarless trench.

Short-sleeve sweaters look great over blouses (both short and long sleeve) and solo with pencil skirts and trousers.  Land’s End makes a lovely, affordable short-sleeve sweater in misses, petite, plus and tall sizes.  They also come in nearly two-dozen colors and cost under-$50, not a bad deal.

These ankle length pants from J.Crew have a slim but not skinny style.  I tried them on last week and found they were a little too full in the thigh to be flattering on me.  This is something that can be fixed with alterations, but I’d rather try a few other styles first.

LOFT has a pair of bi-stretch pants that I would like to see on a person who’s not a model.  I also put these WHBM ankle-length “perfect” pants on the list.  Plus-size?  These Michael Kors ankle pants look like they might be worth a try.

For the accessories, I chose these Sole Society pumps because they expose enough skin to help lengthen the look of your legs.  The pointed-toe also helps in this regard.

The bag in the photo is blue and white tweed, unfortunately I couldn’t find anything similar in a less-than-Marc Jacobs price point.  This Minkoff printed bag is a good alternate choice.  Need something a bit cheaper?  This blue and grey jacquard bowler bag is a good choice at ($80).

I would complete the look with classic red nails and a low-updo.  I like this combination because it continues the sophisticated simplicity of the look.

That Zara coat is ultra chic. I just can’t swallow the price, though. I just bought a yellow collarless trench from Target that I love but it was only $60, which is a bit more palatable.

Your blog is magnificent. I’m trying to transition my wardrobe from “life in college” to “working professional” and these guides are so helpful in my accomplishing the look I want. Thanks a million for the chic and cheap tips!

I have 2 pairs of the Loft bi-stretch pants, and I LOVE them. The Marisa fit has actually made it possible for me to wear pants to work (Hallelujah!). They fit really well and look great, although it’s worth taking into account that they are unlined. Of course, I can’t vouch for other body types (I’m relatively tall and thin, but carry most of my weight in my hips and thighs).

I actually wear the Julie fit, not the Marisa fit linked to here. The Julie fit is for curvier bodies, not sure who the Marisa fit works best one.

I found a slightly similar bag from Coach on Amazon in case anyone is interested 🙂 : https://www.amazon.com/Coach-Chelsea-Tweed-Boucle-Medium/dp/B006FNGV4K

what do you mean by too full in the thigh on the jcrew pants? too much room or too little?

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
