Pssssst! Dry Shampoo ($6)

For our last day of under-$50 items, I wanted to post some of my favorite drugstore makeup and beauty finds.  The dry shampoo above is my favorite.  I’ve dabbled in more expensive brands, but I always end up right back at the bottom shelf picking up a can of Pssssst!.

Another drugstore hair product that I love?  Not Your Mother’s Volumizing Hairspray.

For the eyes, I couldn’t live without Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara.  If you like bold eyeshadow, Color Tattoo cream eye color from Maybelline is a great product.  And if you need to keep your shadow in place, try NYX Eye Shadow Base.

For the lips, I like this bareMinerals colored lip balm, it’s similar to Burt’s Bees but the colors are richer.  My current favorite lipstick color is shade 08 from Kate Moss’s Rimmel collection.

If you’re looking for some inexpensive skincare products, this Boots No. 7 Hot Cloth Cleanser is a very cool product.  It’s similar to the very pricey Eve Lom cleanser in that is removed with a hot muslin cloth for maximum effectiveness.  I also started using these Burt’s Bees Grapefruit Cleansing Towelettes earlier this week, and I like them so far.

I’m going to give that dry shampoo a try, I’m always on the hunt for something better than my baby powder as dry shampoo routine!

  2. Cait says:

I swear by this dry shampoo too! It’s the best! And, I love the smell.

  3. Brittany says:

Can someone who works out every day tell me if any dry shampoo has worked for them? I have been trying DESPERATELY to stop shampooing everyday, but even if I wet my hair and dry it and then use dry shampoo, I am STILL a hot mess. Does it just not work if you plan on going to the gym?! 🙁

    • Stephanie says:

I would also love to know the answer to this! And maybe a step-by-step tutorial on how to use it? Maybe I’m just doing it wrong?

    • LS says:

Hey Brittany, I used dry shampoo when I was working out a lot (double workouts on some days). It worked well for me. I don’t notice a difference between how well it worked then and how it works now (I’m injured now and can’t work out).

I will add that the transition period between washing my hair every day to every other day was brutal. I was working out a ton then and dry shampoo did nothing for me. I just suffered through it. It was about 2-3 months of looking a little gross and then after that my hair adjusted. That may be what you’re going through now.

Obviously, workouts in the morning / evening will help get around this problem, but I know some people love their mid-day workouts.

    • Belle says:

How are you applying it? I gave a speech a few weeks ago to some ladies and found out they were applying the shampoo like hairspray. Apparently it’s a common mistake. You have to lift the hair spray the roots and scalp directly, spray liberally, it takes a lot more than people realize. Then, brush it out to the ends until you no longer see any powderiness.

If you’re applying it right and it’s still not working, you may just want to switch to a sulfate free shampoo and keep washing. Annoying but it may be the only solution.

  4. Caitlyn says:

The only type of dry shampoo that does not leave my hair even more greasy is baby powder. I have tried Psssst along with four other types of dry shampoo, and none of them have worked for me.

I also work out every day and I end up washing my hair every day – if I didn’t wash after a workout (I’m either running for over 40 minutes or doing CrossFit) the results would be disgusting. On occasional days off, I give my hair a break and use the baby powder. Just use a ton of leave-in conditioner (I like the “It’s a 10” brand, or whatever it’s called) before you blow-dry and hope for the best.

  5. Anna says:

I agree 1000% on the Max Factor mascara. My best friend bought some for me for Christmas (based on your recommendation!) and I have used it ever since!

  6. Rachel says:

Am I one of the only people in the world who hates the Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara? It made my lashes clumpy and my eyes super itchy. Happened to my mom, too. Maybe it’s genetic…

  7. Anne says:

My all-time favorite drugstore find is Wet and Wild’s eye shadow palette, “walking on egg shells.” It has some shimmer, but it is still work appropriate. I get a lot of compliments when I wear it. High pigment that lasts.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
