Two Ways: Sneakers for Casual Days

For Casual Friday.  Depending on your office, this may or may not qualify as casual attire.  I chose these skinny Minnie pants because I know a LOT of readers own them, and I’m always getting questions about how to wear them.  However, if these are too snug for your office, you have two options:

You can replace them with a slim-fitting chino, like these ankle-length Copper Key chinos from Dillard’s.  Or you can add a blazer or cardigan to cover the rear-view.  In a cardigan, I would suggest black.  In a jacket, a white blazer.

I love a black and white stripe shirt, but this one is a bit out of my price range.  Instead, try this NYDJ Wide Stripe Tee or this Petit Bateau classic French tee.  Plus-size?  This half-sleeve tee from Sejour is nice.

I adore this coat, and it is such a steal at under-$50.  The style is perfect for the weekends, or even over cocktail dresses for a night out.

As for the accessories, the inspiration for this look came from Pinterest.  So I chose a red bag and gold jewelry.  And we all know that aviators are my sunnies-style of choice, so these black ones were a no brainer.

For the hair, I would wear it down and wavy.  For the makeup, a sheer red lip and red nails are a must.

For the Weekend.  I’m still deeply in love with navy and black as a color combination, so pairing this navy trench with the black sneakers was a must.  To bring it all together, I added the black and blue scarf to the mix.  However, if you want one sans heart-print, try this Marc Jacobs leopard scarf or this delicate floral print from Club Monaco.

If you plan to buy the Gap trench, know that it runs a little big.  I tried on the small and ended up with the XS.  And if you want it to be well-fitted to your body, it’s going to need some tailoring.

Distressed jeans can be made at home or bought in a store.  I found mine at Old Navy.  I’m fairly happy with the fit, though the pocket placement isn’t the greatest, or maybe I just need to do a few more leg lifts after a winter spent on the couch.

Scoopneck tees are my favorite, but they can be tough to find.  I ordered one of these Victoria’s Secret tees to try.  If it doesn’t work out though, it’s no big deal.  I still love my $15 Everlane tee.

Silver accessories were the flavor of the day.  I had to have these v-shaped hoops for a casual earring with punch.  As for the bag, if you’d like a silver tote for less, try this BCBG Cory Tote.

For the hair, I would put it up in a teased ponytail with a headband.  For the makeup, keep it neutral on the face but add a cool nail color, like this Formula X Celestials polish in navy.

I’m so happy sneakers are in for everyday wear- now if only I could wear them to work…

Does anyone else feel like they’re being punked with this sneaker post? Belle, I adore your style and site, but this just seems so beyond your norm. What’s next? Leggings as pants? PJs on the airplane? UGGs??!!? It’s a slippery slope. That’s all I’m saying.

And before anyone jumps on me for hating comfort, I have several athletic injuries to my lower body. I’m a huge supporter of practical comfortable footwear that’s still looks like I’m trying.

    • Belle says:

This is a trend that a lot of women are embracing, it’s versatile enough to be worn in many ways. And if the sneakers are clean, then I see no issue. Sneakers aren’t bedroom slippers like Uggs, they can be styled to be professional in many casual settings or business casual ones (which PJs can’t), and they’re by no means as immodest as legging as pants. So no, it’s not a punking.

Must we recall your April Fool’s joke?….granted, those were hideous, whereas these are just casual, but doesn’t leave these being a punk out of the realm of possibility.

Ok, I have been debating between the Gap trench and the BR trench (navy). Gap seems like a better deal if you won’t get a lot of use out of it, but BR keeps having sales (like now) and their version seems to have a more flattering cut.

Has anyone tried both firsthand? Any insight?

I love this one, Belle! I’m in law school, so it’s fun for me to see more casual styles on the blog.

  5. Anna says:

I love this set – feels similar to your weekend outfits – which are perfect for days where I am just at the library, but not seeing students. I saw a pair of nikes with dark gray leopard print that would be amazing with these outfits…

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
