1) A reporter from NYMag crashed a party attended by Wall Street’s elite.  Apparently, the one-percenters who belong to Kappa Beta Phi require new members to dress in spangled leotards.  The rich, they’re really not like the rest of us.

2) Posh Spice’s singing talents weren’t enviable, but Victoria Beckham designs dresses that are positively lust-worthy.  This fuchsia gown is a showstopper.  I’ve seen this simple cap-sleeve dress on several TV heroines.  And this beige dress with mesh accents hits all the right notes.

3) House of Cards has seized the nation’s consciousness.  For locals, take The Washington Post’s quiz to find out how well you know the locations featured in the shows opening credits.  Also, check out this article on what House of Cards can teach us about managing a crisis.

4) Speaking of HoC, the Celeste dress from Club Monaco is pure Claire Underwood.

5) Alterations Needed has a great post on how tailoring can change a garment from fashion faux pas to fabulous.  You’ll never believe how she transformed a pair of skinny trousers.

6) I like to hit Old Navy from time-to-time to see what’s new.  I love this jersey, wrap-front top in ballet pink.  This inexpensive field jacket in dark navy is a must-have.  And if you’re looking for a pullover for the weekends, this cotton hoodie is.the.one.  It’s perfect.

7) Everything is bigger in Texas, even debutante balls.

8) Sneakers are having a moment.  Editors, bloggers and fashionistas are all wearing lace-ups.  WhoWhatWear has “7 Tricks” to wear them right.

If you’re interested in trying the trend, you can go minimalist with a pair of black Pumas or beige New Balance Tomboys.  Want something a bit more unique?  Try this metallic Ecco pair or this Nike pair with violet accents.

9) Dry shampoo is a time saver, and it you color your hair, dry shampooing every other day can prolong the length of your dye job.  Glitter Guide has the best dry shampoos for every hair type.  My favorite is Psssst, but DryBar Detox is a very close second.

10) If you’ve ever wanted to try the Cate Blanchett-endorsed skincare line SK-II, you can buy this $100 kit, which contains premium-size samples of their most beloved products.  I love the Facial Treatment Essence.  I’m not sure it’s a miracle cure, but it really brightens my skin.

11) An unmarried woman, 7-months pregnant moves from California to New York to attend Columbia University.  As a result, a California judge awards custody of her newborn baby to the father.  Oh, and did I mention the father is Olympian Bode Miller?

12) These Zara heels need to get in my closet!

  1. HC says:

ugh. I can’t even with Bode Miller. He seems like such a creep in all his interviews (not to mention his creepy story about how he basically stalked his current wife into agreeing to marry him). the fact that he can’t even call his son the name the son’s mother legally gave him is the last straw. I spent much of the olympics hoping he would lose all his races (mature, I know)…

    • Belle says:

The name thing really got me too. It just shows you how little interest he has in co-parenting. He clearly has decided that his wants trump everything else, and given how people fawn over him, it’s not hard to see where that attitude came from.

  2. PSP says:

I have that ON shirt – HUGE disappointment. It shrunk after one (cold, delicate) wash (no dryer). The V Neck wrap is very bizarre too – sewn together with what looks like one stitch. I don’t recommend!

  3. Holy hell, that custody case. I can’t even imagine the horror of having a baby taken away. It’s not like, as an Olympic athlete, the dad is spending all that much time with the baby.

  4. SC says:

Belle, I love that before and after on what a difference tailoring can make in your clothes. Are you aware of whether any blogs have done that for mens clothes? Not enough men (especially in DC) know what a tailor can do for their look.

Also, I’ve recently started using Pssst! based on your rave reviews and I love it. Only dry shampoo that has ever worked for me.

  5. The Bode Miller custody battle has tainted my view of him. It’s so messed up and anti woman.

  6. Addison says:

I literally received that Old Navy short in the mail yesterday and i agree with the other commenter, it was a huge disappointment. I was thinking about trying to fix the weirdly gaping wrap by sewing it, but it sounds like washing it will ruin it too so I’m going to go with my first instinct and return it. So sad, it looked adorable on the model

  7. Thank you for the link Belle! Have a great weekend!

November AMA: You Asked, I Answered

Another month has come and gone, and between a busy work schedule, illness and the search for new childcare, I almost forgot to ask for questions for the AMA.  Luckily, I remembered late last night.  So here we go. I always think it’s funny when people send rude or overly personal questions when I put […]

I love stocking stuffers.  They are the best part of Christmas.  There’s just nothing quite like an affordable gift that’s funny or useful or chic (or maybe all three).  So here is Part One of my stocking stuffer gift guides, where nothing costs more than $30.

You Have, You Need: Camel Sweater Edition

In the name of fiscal responsibility, I’m taking a shopping respite through the end of the year.  When you write a fashion blog, not shopping is like being a person on a diet who moves into a McDonald’s.  But I’m determined to flex some self-discipline now that my holiday shopping is done.

Add to Cart: Five Recent Amazon Purchases

Since my daughter was born, Amazon has claimed so much of my money that I had to buy stock just to get some of it back.  Between the formula, onesies, fruit pouches, diapers, wipes, and ever evolving list of baby development gear, I could not survive without Prime.   My husband no longer notices the […]
