Belle’s Weekly Reading: February 13, 2014

An old friend of mine was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder several years ago.  Since then, it’s been very difficult to care about him and be apart of his life without becoming too embroiled in the trials of his illness.  You want to help, but knowing how/when to help and when to step back is nearly impossible.  This quote really has me thinking about the situation in a new way.

***

1) During the early part of my career, I experienced a lot of reverse age discrimination.  So I found this piece on why it might be a good idea to keep your age to yourself very interesting.

2) Zara always has great pieces with lots of style.  This week, the new arrivals are especially gorgeous.  I love this top-handle purse and this relaxed cocktail dress with neckline embellishments.  But my favorite piece was this robin’s egg blue coat.

3) Now that football season is over, I’m waiting for March Madness to begin.  If you can’t wait to see some amazing basketball, don’t miss this miraculous shot from a high school basketball game in Washington state.

4) The longer my hair grows, the more I struggle with tangles. This Tangle Teaser is a lifesaver.

5) Want to style your clothes so that you look slimmer?  Try these 7 Editor Styling Tips from the ladies at Elle magazine.

6) Who needs a t-shirt that illustrates the parts of a flower?  Who would be crazy enough to pay $300 for it?

7) On Wednesday, I talked about how much I like sleek bows on shoes.  But why buy a pair of shoes with bows on them when you can make a pair of bow clips that you can wear on all of your shoes?  The Vault Files has the DIY instructions.

8) I wish I could justify buying the reboot of the Polaroid camera.  I just don’t take enough photos to justify the price, but this Fujifilm camera is available for half the cost.

9) My college friend Cassandra Lavalle, editor of Coco + Kelley, has a fun article on picking a plant and decorative pot to brighten up your space.  I adore this inexpensive, pink ombre pot from Urban Outfitters and these metallic herb pots from Anthropologie.

10) Mango’s jackets and coats are always lovely, but this detachable hood parka is one of the chicest relaxed coats that I have ever seen.  The exaggerated collar on this steel grey coat is also fantastic.  And don’t miss this double-breasted trench.

11) Leave it to Joan Didion to perfectly explain why I find Woody Allen’s movies tiresome.

12) The NARSassist Eye Palette is so beautiful, I don’t want to use it on my eyelids, I want to paint my house with it.  And if you’re looking for an inexpensive copy, this e.l.f. palette has many of the same hues for $6.

13)  The sexualization of women is a problem whether you’re the CEO of a Fortune 50 company or a former reality star trying to build a career as an entrepreneur.  But when Lauren Conrad was asked what her favorite position was by a radio host, she gave an unexpected answer.

Great list, Belle! I am in love with that steel gray coat from Mango. Also, I follow Cassandra Lavelle on Pinterest and love her blog – that’s cool that you know her from college.

  2. HC says:

Love that Joan Didion article about Woody Allen movies. I could never explain exactly why they aggravate me, and that hit it on the head.

  3. Heather says:

Totally agree on the wanting to help a friend/knowing when to step back comment! Last Valentine’s Day I broke up with my fiancee who had bi-polar disorder. After a year of enduring his “down stage,” and telling myself that it would get better once he got a job/listened to his psychiatrist/saw how much I loved him, I decided I couldn’t take a lifetime of never knowing when things would get better, or if they would get better. Leaving him was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I felt guilty for abandoning him in his time of need, but 1 year later, I am so much happier! This Valentines Day is a celebration of being happily single!!

That flower shirt is not even cute, but it’s a bit vulgar. $300?…. I wouldn’t even take it if it was free.

  5. THB says:

    300 Dollars for a t-shirt! This must be a #botanist problem.

  6. Nancy M says:

Woah, that Joan Didion piece was great! Thanks!

  7. Terri says:

GREAT COAT! Zara is a great price point and the style just edgy enough.

  8. Terri says:

and the quote, is on target.

  9. rar says:

I have the fuji camera and would definitely recommend it. It’s a great camera and I always fun when I use it!

  10. Rose says:

I liked some of the early Woody Allen movies, then he went through a too serious phase and I quit seeing them. In the past few years I think he’s improved, or possibly taken a que from Pedro Aldovmar and gotten a bit wackier. “Blue Jasmine” which dealt with self-absorption to the max, was still an interesting moving. Plus Cate Blanchete’s wardrobe was awesome.

  11. Gabriela says:

Love the article about reverse ageism in the workplace. I graduated from college a year early in 2011, and while one year might seem insignificant, I’ve gotten used to the “you’re so young!” shrieks when co-workers learn my age. Of course they focus on the fact that I’m only 24, instead of on the fact that I busted my butt to graduate from a top-50 school in three years!

The Zara coat is such a gorgeous color!

  12. Ruth says:

If you’re interested in a different tangle tamer comb, try this:
    https://www.amazon.com/Krest-Tangle-Tamer-Curved-Detangler/dp/B003N8QU4Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1392345688&sr=8-3&keywords=tangle+comb

(Also available at Sally.) The teeth are curved so if you look at it head-on (not flat like the picture), half the teeth curve to the right and the other half curve to the left. I have fine, mid-back length, wavy (sometimes wooly) hair and have used this comb for YEARS. I don’t even have to comb starting at the ends then going a little further up and so on anymore; I can just start from the root with this comb.

I love this comb so much I have one in the shower, too. I couldn’t resist adding my .02 when you recommended that other detangler brush…

  13. Kara says:

Great quote today, Belle. Have had a few friends that it applies to, and currently going through it again with someone I love who has depression & anxiety. Good reminder on Valentine’s Day that true love isn’t always romantic and can be very difficult, requiring us to accept people exactly as they are and letting go of trying to fix them.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
