Ask Belle: Unique Colored Flats

Jan 23, 2014

Hi Belle,

I recently lost 75 pounds.  As a result, my feet shrunk and none of my beautiful shoes fit me.  This is good news for my friends and The Goodwill, not such good news for me.

I replaced all of my high heels but I need to restock my supply of flats.  I bought a red pair, but I’m hoping you can suggest some more unique colors or styles.  (Thanks to your blog, I think every woman in my office has red flats.)

Can’t wait to see your suggestions!  Miri

I love a stylish flat shoe.  Basic black flats have their place, as do flesh-toned flats, but I like a little more pop.  So if you want something chic for your feet, you’ve come to the right place.

rsz_screen_shot_2014-01-23_at_60526_amClockwise from Left to Right, Chinese Laundry Cadence Flat ($89) // Loeffler Randall Erika Flat ($129) // Via Spiga Lilac Flat in Coral and Snakeskin ($175)

Colored Flats.  Red flats are the best choice because they can be worn in any season and with casual or work attire.  These Nine West Speakup flats are a good, inexpensive choice, as are these Steve Madden ankle strap flats.  If you, like Miri, have red covered, there are lots of other colors to choose from.  Because, whatever your favorite color is, you can find it in a flat shoe.

I adore these chartreuse flats from Nordstrom.  They’re so bright and bold.  They would look amazing with grey, navy and white.  If they’re too bright for you, try these emerald green flats from Steve Madden.

Another color I love is coral.  It is perfect for spring and summer, and it looks good with pale neutral sweaters in the fall.  The Via Spiga flats are great, but if you’re looking to save a little money, these Corso Como Tawna flats.  And in the same color family, I like bright orange flats as well.  These Sam Edelman patent flats are nice, as are these toe-cap flats from Yoox.

Metallic Flats.  I am constantly on the hunt for the perfect pair of gold flats.  Steve Madden made a pair a few years back, and I bought three pairs.  Sadly, I buried my final pair last August.  (The Flats are dead, long live the flats.)  But there are lots of great flats available for purchase right now.

I love the Loeffler’s above, and the price is really good for that brand.  Plus, the speckled metallic is really unique.  I also like this J.Crew Viv flats in silver foil and these Michael Kors Pippa flats in gold.  In the under-$100 category, these Steve Madden D’orsay ankle-strap flats are lovely.  I also like these crinkle flats from Express in several metallic shades.

Animal Prints.  September thru March, I wear leopard.  March through August, I wear snakeskin.  This is my seasonal animal print rotation.

These BP Moveover flats in leopard are some of my favorites (just $50!), and this leopard pair from Wet Seal are just $17.  The scalloped edges on these Loeffler flats are crazy awesome.  For an inexpensive option, try these Old Navy flats.  Or to get the best of two trends, choose these DvF flats with metallic toe caps that are on sale for $105.

Whether you wear flats every day or just on occasion, choose skimmers that have style.  Basics are great, but sometimes, bolder is better.

FYI the Chinese Laundry flats are cheaper on 6PM! https://www.6pm.com/chinese-laundry-kristin-cavallari-cadence-black

I have feet that are wider in the forefoot (toe box area) and narrower in the heel. Does anyone have any suggestions on brands/particular styles?

I find most flats to be too narrow these days, which is fine for my heel but super painful for my forefoot.

    • AG says:

No suggestion, but I have the same problem! Wide shoes slip off, and even with extra cushions or padding to make them fit tighter in the heel, they look unflattering-ly wide everywhere else. Narrow/normal shoes are painful on my toe joints (I refuse to call them bunions).

    • Caroline says:

Same problem here. My feet are also short (I’m usually a size 5.5) with very high arches. I’m pretty sure I should just avoid flats altogether, but if anyone knows of some that would fit my foot type please tell me what they are!

    • LS says:

Same problem here, ladies! I haven’t found one particular brand that works, but I have one pair of flats with an ankle strap and that seems to be a great solution (similar to below). They let me buy a size that fits the front of my foot without falling out of the back. I definitely will buy more in this style if I can find it!

I also find that leather uppers help immensely when it comes to fit. If I do buy a pair that’s too tight on my forefoot, leather will stretch out over time while synthetic just stays uncomfortable forever.

      • Pancakes says:

Thanks for the suggestions, LS. I seem to have no problem with loafer-type flats (maybe they’re just cut wider in the toebox), but ballet and pointy or almond toe flats are terrible for me unless they have elastic.

I do try to buy leather flats, but it’s tough — a lot of cute ones are synthetic!

        • Addison says:

Shoe makers seem to be cutting flats super low now. Nearly every pair I buy shows toe cleave which used to happen a lot less. My feet aren’t particularly wide, but most flats rub, often to the point of a blister, on the knuckle of my big toe 🙁

  3. Larissa says:

I bought these in navy for my wedding – I need a sturdy strap and can’t wear heels anymore. Perfect “something blue” for under my dress!

  4. H says:

I had a pair of cobalt blue flats that I wore to death. I found they went with everything in my closet!

  5. Sharon says:

I just bought the Steve Madden D’Orsay flats at DSW in Baltimore for $14. I didn’t see them in a quick search online, but it may be worth checking your local store.

  6. SamW says:

I bought a pair of the Nine West Speakup flats in patent black back in September and they are very comfortable and have held up well.

  7. lindsay says:

I think purple is a good color to consider. It’s a good accent color that goes with a lot of things in my black/white/blue/red wardrobe. I’ve been looking for a pair for awhile so if you see anything good, share.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
