10th Commandment: September 9

Sep 9, 2013

I purchased a DvF wrap dress at the beginning of the summer and wore it significantly more than I thought I would.  I wore it to the office.  I wore it to dinner.  I wore it to church.  It became my go-to what-the-heck-am-I-going-to-wear-today option.  So I am searching for another one, here are some options.

I just bought the Adele wrap last week when Macy’s had 20% off, and it is awesome! Very flattering!

  2. Sara says:

I believe DVF will have a special place in heaven for inventing the wrap dress.

  3. Danielle says:

Wrap dresses. Am I doing it wrong? I bought a secondhand BCBG wrap dress that seems to fit perfectly. Until I sit. The dress falls on either side of my legs and reveals a lot of my thigh. Sometimes, it feels a little low cut as well. Is the dress too small? Are some badly made? I’m 5’4, 34C, 27″ waist and it was an XS. I’d love to love one.

    • Capitol Hill SE says:

I have problems with wrap dresses as well. I probably haven’t tried enough of them to find a good one, but I’ve had such bad experiences with wrap dresses that I don’t feel like trying on hundreds of them. I’m your size, minus a couple inches in all places. 🙂

  4. AttiredAttorney says:

As a curvy girl, the only way I can make most wrap dresses work-appropriate is with a camisole. Somehow, that extra V of fabric on the chest destroys the whole look for me – it becomes reminiscent of something I wore in middle school rather than a sleek, work appropriate ensemble. Any recs for wrap dresses that come up a little higher to avoid the overt va-va-va-voom look for the office?

  5. Jennifer P says:

I have that BCBG Adele dress and I LOVE it! I wear it, and the same one in a couple other patterns all the time! P.S. Nordstrom and Amazon both have it on sale now for $118.80 🙂

I would LOVE a post and/or advice on how to keep a wrap dress in place throughout the day. I am so close to throwing my beautiful DVF in the trash because 1. a camisole ruins the neckline, and 2. when I sit, the skirt unwraps/falls to the sides, exposing my entire upper thighs. Hollywood tape doesn’t work and safety pins look horribly obvious. Is the dress doomed??

  7. SQC says:

Echo every other commenter–what can we do about the cleavage? (And I agree a camisole ruins the neckline, adds extra bulk at the waist.)

My solution for the unwrapping skirt was to buy my DVF two sizes bigger than I usually wear. Of course, this only enhances the cleavage problem.

    • Amanda says:

I have a smaller than average chest, but I have sewn a nifty little snap button closure to the V in one of my wrap dresses and it works & fits like a charm!

  8. Mo says:

I may or may not have used a paperclip last week to prevent excess boob-age.

    May.

  9. Emily says:

Oh my goodness, I LOVE my wrap dresses. I have some 3/4 and some long-sleeve and I wear them ALL fall and winter and into spring. They are wonderful and so versatile.

  10. KC says:

I don’t have problems with them falling open, but I usually wear a slip just so I feel like I have more coverage. For the top, if I don’t like how the camisole looks I’ll wear a scarf to hide cleavage, or I’ll wear the camisole and then wear a big statement necklace that covers it up. Also, I have a “faux wrap” dress from Boden that is great, plus it comes in tall sizes. Still need a cami or scarf, however.

  11. Sam says:

Dear Belle, I am coming to DC this week and just discovered your blog. I love it 🙂 The style tips are very useful while prepping for my new job. Thank you!

  12. E says:

I love wrap dresses. And I’ve also come to the conclusion that sometimes everyone has a LITTLE bit of cleavage in the office, and truly cannot help it. Also, the best way to avoid the leg situation is — wear a full slip. Invest in the black non-lace top one from Gap Body. It solves all my problems and no more camisole.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
