I loved this quote the moment I read it.  Our modern world is conditioning us to be dissatisfied with nearly everything, but too often, we don’t turn that angst into anything productive or positive.  So whether you’re inventing fire or your just figuring out a way to deal with a personal issue, action is the source of all solutions.  What will you fix today?

1) In the first world, we talk about “girl power” as a way to help women grow in their personal or professional lives.  But we often take for granted the challenges that girls and women in the developing world face…like being forced into marriage before you’re even a teenager.

This video from MEMRI shows an 11-year-old Yemeni girl who is being rescued before her mother can sell her into marriage.  Powerful stuff.

2) That first one was a tough act to follow, but…I’m really feeling structured necklines for fall.  I can’t wait for styles like this Alexander Wang Gathered Silk Top and this MSGM Asymmetric Blouse to trickle down to Zara or H&M.

3) Can someone explain to me the appeal of the pointy nail shape I keep seeing on so many actresses, entertainers and socialites?  And speaking of nails, I’m thinking about buying this Velvet Manicure Kit from Ciate.  I love the berry poncho color.

4) I was invited to a late summer wedding and I’d like to find a dress with a color befitting the warm weather.  I like this light green dress with a flirt a-line skirt from 4.Collective or this coral, gathered neck dress from Raoul.

5) Three female executives are suing Merrill Lynch for gender discrimination.  Apparently, ML required the women to read a book titled Seducing the Boys Club and attend seminars on how they could better fit into a male dominated workplace.  Advice included gems like playing on their “masculine instincts” to “protect the weaker sex.”

6) I bought a pair of these Old Navy lounge pants to wear around the house on the weekends.  They’re baby soft.  Best $25 I’ve spent in a while.

7) These have been making the rounds around the Hill, but in case you haven’t seen them…check out 29 Hill Staffer Problems and 29 Worst Things About Being an Intern.  And don’t miss The Hungry Lobbyist’s post, 20 Lobbyist Problems.

8) I’ve been searching for a pool cover-up that was classic and easy.  I found the best selection at Piperlime.  I looked at this printed kurta, but ultimately chose this gauzy white tunic.

9) Feeling a bit shiny in the summer heat?  Try HD Microfinish Powder.  It sets your makeup and keeps shine at bay.  Thanks for the recommendation, Wit & Whimsy.

10) Did a little baking for a friend’s party last week.  And when I tell you that you need to make these sea salt brownie cookies, I.am.not.kidding.

Hey Belle, the MUFE powder you recommended seems good, but this $6 version is just as good, according to https://www.londonbeautyreview.com/2010/05/hd-powder-showdown-elf-vs-makeup.html

  2. Gabrielle says:

    10) If you’re not feeling the chocolate, or if you wanted to combine two salt and brown butter things for a take on s’mores, try these https://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2009/11/salted-brown-butter-crispy-treats/ They’re amazing!

  3. Joanne says:

I own the Velvet Manicure Kit in the purple. It is fun, beautiful and easy to do if you have 15 min to work on your nails. It produces a beautifully bold color that you can’t get from normal nail polish. I pull it out for special occasions and it returns tons of compliments. It’s also hard not to pet your own nails because they feel so plush! Ha! My biggest advice if you decide to buy is to take off the top of the container holding the crushed velvet and just tap the velvet onto your wet nails. Enjoy!

  4. Samantha says:

Thanks for posting something from MEMRI. It’s a truly incredible organization that receives little fanfare for their work.

  5. Meghan says:

That Alexander Wang top is pretty incredible but agree- there will have to be a less expensive version by Fall. When there is, I’ll be getting it too ha.

  6. Meghan says:

and p.s thanks for including me! that powder is pretty incredible!

  7. HH says:

Those cookies look like the perfect thing to bring to a house warming party tomorrow. Thanks, Belle!

  8. Hanna says:

Not really funny, unless you have no grasp of basic science.

    No one “invented” fire.

  9. NH says:

The quote makes me think of “Movement is life.”

  10. KH says:

Damn, Belle. I love your quotes

  11. Sarah Morris says:

Thanks for mentioning the “29 Worst Things About Being An Unpaid Intern In Washington D.C.” Buzzfeed post. I am actually in the picture in #16. However we were paid. LOL.

  12. Addison says:

I laughed so hard at Hill staffer problems, lobbyist problems and 29 worst things about being an intern that my neighbors may have heard me. Thanks for posting!

  13. Hey –

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
